Transportation: The weather conditions can get fairly bad up here- and sometimes buses do not run to locations really far from campus. I travel to the airport often, and the bus ride to get there is affordable, however, it does take 2 hours to get to the closest airport. Public transportation is for the most part efficient here, and there are many different routes to take you around town. Many students share rides (we even have a facebook page dedicated to App State Ride Share Group) to towns like Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh. When you come to Boone, you know yo make sacrifices for things that would be readily available and close in a big city- so I'm not complaining! But it would be nice to have more times the bus can take you to airports.

Health & Safety: I personally have not seen security often enough to make a mental note about it. During game days they are all around campus- but during the week, I feel the campus is open yet safe enough for me to walk anywhere. There are Appalachian State issued vehicles that drive around most of the parking lots during the night hours. And access into any dorm building requires a card, assigned to each individual student. There are also Emergency polls places around campus, so if there ever was an emergency, you could get help. The police are not overbearing, but because the campus is so mountain-esque, many crimes go un-reported to unnoticed. Our campus is not sprawling, and for the most part it is pretty contained, which could lead some students to believe police are everywhere-but I've never had a problem with feeling secure!

Local Area: The experience of Boone is something so different from a lot of other college campuses. The entire town has a very folksy, bluegrass-y, and creative vibe. People have such varying degrees and interests, it keeps the town thriving with variety. There is always some type of music performance going on around town- we love outdoor venues here in the mountains. The street called Kings Street runs straight through town, and that's where most attractions and festivals happen. There are many little different kitschy restaurants to go to, with a lot of organic or vegan options. People delve into Boone 100% here, and every student loves where they chose to go to school. Skiing of course is huge up here, as well as snowboarding and tubing. Outdoorsy people with a flare for music, yoga, and adventure are here! I will say, if you come from a big city like I did (I'm originally from Tampa) coming to such a small town can be a bit of a reverse culture shock. But it is nice having the best of both worlds- because a lot of people forget towns like Boone still exist, and even thrive the way they do.

Academics: We have a lot of professors who went to school here. I feel like that is saying something about how awesome Appalachian is. If professor want to teach at the school that shaped them, then we must be a note worthy school.

Campus Housing: I am actively involved in the housing process on campus. I just applied to be an RA and I have currently served two years on Hall Council. I love the housing component of campus because I feel like it is a great way to meet new people, learn to be a leader and get students involved on campus. Our housing department on campus is superb and I love everything about it.

Off-Campus Dining: This is Boone, so there are a lot of different local places who promote local raised food. One of my favorite parts of Boone are the places to eat.

Greek Life: I do not like sororities because of the people who join. I like the idea of greek life because it promotes so much, I think it is a unique tradition but I am not involved.

Health & Safety: We have a service call safe-ride and it is the best thing this campus has. You call and tell them where you are on campus and where you want to go on campus and they will be there to get you. Great system for girls at night. Drivers are super friendly and all around I praise them. We also have this thing for weekends and they are called, Beepers. You call them and they will take you anywhere you want to go for two dollar. They are students and it is a student organized thing that promotes safe drinking and not driving while under the influence.

Transportation: We have the bus that goes to every main off campus housing and you can always rely on. Cars are good if you want one here, its not a necessity. I do not have a car and I have had no trouble thus far.

Drug Safety: If you are not in that crowd you do not notice it.

5 College Sophomore

Administration: I feel safe at my school, we actually were ranked number eleven for drug and alcohol busts. Meaning that we take these things seriously and people get caught easily, not that we are the number eleven party school.

Local Area: Perfect little town that has friendly people and makes you feel as if you were home the moment you arrive. Your heart will always feel something for Boone. Everyone loves it and hates to graduate because they will miss the people and the beauty of Boone.

Party Scene: We only have a few select bars and clubs, I am not twenty-one yet so I do not know exactly how awesome they are. I have a heard a few good things about them but nothing spectacular.

Athletics: We are not known for our varsity sports, more club sports have a larger name at our school. Like we have one of the best snowboarding team on the east coast. Our rugby team is almost more popular than our soccer and baseball team. Other than our football team and rarely basketball team, we do not normally care about varsity sports. Hopefully in the future that will change a little bit because we just moved up divisions for football and people here really enjoy that time of the year. We are big supporter of tailgating more than the actual game it seems, which is good and bad. Our football players and athletes in general are very cocky and full of themselves even though in almost every big name sport, we lose practically every game.

Majors: I am very happy when it comes to my program. They are involved on campus and people highly respect my degree program. Since its a growing field, I hope to not struggle with finding a job once I graduate

5 College Sophomore

Majors: My program allows us to have a sustainable campus. We are actively involved in various organizations to help encourage sustainability. The campus take us seriously because they can see we are changing the mind sets of students for not only while they are in college but once they graduate.

Scholarships: Verification is always a problem. I always have to fill out detailed forms in order for my financial aid to process. I can see where they are coming from but if they could take a look into my life they will see I am not some student who is lying about my financial situation.

Academics: We have great professors that truly care, both they and the advisers are always willing to help. The subject material is diverse and interesting. It's a good mix of taking academics seriously and having fun.

Diversity: I am very comfortable here and I feel like we're pretty welcoming of others. Some may not feel the way that I do, but I imagine you will find that anywhere.

Local Area: Definitely a college town! Plenty of restaurants, the parkway, blowing rock! A lot of options!

Off-Campus Housing: It really just depends on what you are looking for! Some are cheap, some are expensive. Some come with furniture, others don't! Some are in walking distance from campus, some far enough to need to ride the bus/drive to campus. It really comes down to personal preference.

Majors: Very easy application. A lot of people trying to get in the program, but not a lot of spots. Pretty competitive for Communication Disorders. Have to have a GPA of at least 3.0.

Majors: I am not officially in the program yet, but so far I love the professors and the intro classes I am taking. The professors really care about their students and want you to succeed!

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Haven't really noticed a problem.

Weather: The rain and snow and wind are sometimes hard to bear, but overall, it is wonderful!
