Campus Housing: Campus is seperated into North Side and South Side. While north side has a quieter reputation, by living on both sides I can tell you the experience is what you make it. North side is smaller giving you the chance to know everyone on your floor and feel like you are apart of a community, and some of the dorm rooms are bigger. On south side you will see and here everything. Both sides are close to the where classes are held and on both sides there is a social atmosphere. The difference is what time you would like to go to sleep. The dorms are nice, though North side is cleaner and its easy to get into your choice of dorm.

Off-Campus Dining: Its a cute mexican restaurant right near the American University shuttle stop and near the Tenlytown metro. It is not that expensive and I believe it even takes eagle bucks. The food is pretty good and the place is usually full of college kids and they offer student jobs.

Greek Life: The Greek life organziations on AU's campus work hard to make AU a better place. They raise money for various charities and initiatives and throw really fun parties.

Athletics: Fan Support & School Spirit – Woosh Go AU!!!! The fans aka AU's "Blue Crew" really make the sport games on campus exciting. Everyone comes out to cheer on our teams and the entire arena is filled with screaming fans!

Academics: Elementary Education – The classes needed for the major are very enjoyable, the professors are extremely approachable, and because it is a very small major the advisors really have the oppurtunity to focus on and get to know the students.

Campus Quality: Environmentally Friendly – American University continuously becomes more environmentally friendly. The school even plans to become carbon neutral by 2020. American has been on its way to realizing this goal hrough the use of solar panels, buildings made of non toxic materials, wind turbines, rain water capturing systems, etc. There is always information and events regarding how to help the environment and save energy.

Campus Quality: Campus Activities – You can almost always find something to do on campus. The students do a great job of arranging for speakers to come to the school, as well as arranging other events. Even though the school is in D.C., it also realizes the importance of having activities on campus for students and really uses the advantage of being in this town to its advantage.

Technology: Computer Options – Not only is the whole school wifi accessible, but the University continues to update the wifi to make it run faster. There are computer labs and plenty of computers in the library. Students can even rent laptops for free. Students are given free virus scanning programs for their computers, as well as free software, such as Endnote. The school offers free classes, in person or online, that teach students how to use different programs. Printers and copiers are available, but students have to pay for them. Still, a student could do well at this school without having a computer or printer of their own.

Administration: AU is pretty strict about academic violations such as plagiarism. On the other hand, though, you don't usually get in trouble for drinking. Your body isn't considered a container, so if you come back to campus drunk you can't get in trouble. However, you can get in serious trouble for possessing alcohol, because it's a dry campus.

Guys & Girls: Once you find your niche, you should be ok. There's pretty prominent Greek life here. There is a very strong gay and lesbian population on campus, making it hard for some girls who can't find straight guys. It isn't the best place to find a mate, but there are plenty of nice people around to make friends with. There are a lot of smokers, too, which can be obnoxious.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: What can I say? The cafeteria is...well...a cafeteria. The food is mostly organic and fair trade, which is nice. Once you know what to get and what to avoid, you can eat happily. There are a few places you can use meal swipes, which is nice, but the cost of a meal plan is pretty ridiculous.

Scholarships: SO EXPENSIVE! Great location, but American is extremely expensive and the funding is virtually non-existant.

Local Area: Were in the heart of DC so the museums and informational attractions are abundant.

Weather: Expect the Unexpected – AU weather is unpredictable. On a daily basis, the weather can and will change drastically.

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: There are a number of off campus apartments to live nearby AU. The most popular off campus housing option is the Berkshire apartments. Students can either choose to rent a unit through AU, or privately through the Berks. The options available are studio, small, medium, large one bedroom, and two bedroom units. The Avalon is across the street from the Berks as is slightly more upscale.

Party Scene: Night Life – There are virtually no parties in the dorms on a typical weekend night. Night life takes place off campus, either in the nearby apartments, the fraternity houses, or the DC clubs and bars. It is the city though, so there is always something going on. And for those that are not into the whole party scene, have no fear. The National Monument is a beautiful place to visit at night, and there are countless restaurants, shows, theaters, and other forms of entertainment offered throughout the city

Transportation: The AU shuttle brings students to and from areas of main campus to Tenley campus and the Tenleytown metro station. The shuttle schedule is often sporadic and can be very aggravating. Students are often waiting at the shuttle stop for 15-20 minutes before a bus finally comes along.

Health & Safety: i felt completly safe while walking around campus even late at night when using the library.

Overall Experience: I've really come to enjoy my school and its openness. Going into college I didn't place much emphasis on where I went but I count myself lucky that Au was such a good match more me. Being able to jump into any class I want or join groups or even audition for school plays without being a major is really a plus for me. In all honesty the only real draw back for me is how expensive the school is.

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: Average College Experience – When people think of college they often look to popular movies like Old School and Animal House to see what to expect especially when it comes to those crazy frat parties. At American University because there is not much Greek housing and because it is strictly a dry campus many of those fantasies go by the way side. Granted there is drug use on campus and off by students but due to consequences it is always kept covered. To be honest drinking is a social aspect of college that isn't able to be contained at any level but at AU isn't out of control.

5 College Junior

Diversity: For years American University has held a reputation for not only being one of the most politically active college campuses in the country but also being one of the most diverse. With hundreds of students from foreign countries enrolled at AU, a diverse culture of political, religious, and ideological thought all come together to create an atmosphere that not only accept everyone's individuality but encourages it. At American University if there is something different to be said, people will say it.

Parking: First of all, i wouldnt really say there is parking on campus during the week.
All spots literally ON CAMPUS are reserved for faculty from 8-5 and parking permits are really over priced!
The best option is to suck it up and pay $5ish dollars to park in the arts center for the day, but even if you want to do that, there is very limited parking there too.
I dont suggest driving to campus, its small enough where it isnt necessary and it's not worth the hastle

Greek Life: There are enough greek organizations on campus for everyone to be happy, but sometimes a few of them get carried away. We have a strict no-hazing policy, but it still happens and it has been really bad a few times. Our University stays on top of most situations and some have had their charters taken away, but somethings still sneek by un noticed, especially drink related in terms of fraternaties.
What I really enjoy about the greek life at AU, however, is the fact that we have co-ed special intrest greek life so you can still have the greek experiance as well as participate in something that you enjoy with other people who have similar intrests.
Greeks throw some parties and they are easy to get to or hear about, but it isnt a big deal

Athletics: The only main downfall to AU sports is that we dont have a football team, and apparently we cannot have one because the people that pay for our sports complex would stop giving us money if we did.
Besides that our teams are awesome and everyone on campus seems to enjoy supporting them. Basketball especially.
What's nice too is that there are insentives to get students to show their spirit, like free food and give aways for some awesome prises.
Sporting events are a great way to have fun at AU

Campus Housing: Dorms Must Be Renovated and Offered More – The dorms on campus aren't horrendous, but they need to be updated. There also needs to be an addition or creation of more dorms. Upperclassmen rarely live on campus due to the lack of dorms.

Many students agree that there is something for everyone at AU, and they are rarely ever bored. Though the school’s population is relatively small and has fewer parties compared to state schools, many claim that it is worth it to be in D.C. and the surrounding area.

Upon arrival at AU, the adjustment period can be tough for people not accustomed to an urban setting. However, making friends is quite easy, and even the shyest students will be able to integrate themselves into the small, tight-knit AU community. For the most part, students have no problem expressing themselves socially or academically. It seems that a “work hard, play hard” philosophy best suits the students at American University.
