Guys & Girls: Dress as your best is definitely the motto at AU. Students intern so a student in business clothes is the norm at AU. As for social life, while AU is a dry campus, parties happen off campus frequently. Students drink often, but if you are not into drinking, there is plenty to do.

Diversity: In terms of racial diversity, American University is mostly white, but the atmosphere is very accepting of all races. We are incredibly politically correct so it could be that any prejudice is masked, but for the most part race doesn't matter. Sexual orientation also doesn't matter. We have a large amount of LGBT students and we are extremely supportive. A former student government president came out as transgender and was congratulated with open arms. What does matter is political beliefs. Majority of people are liberal, democratic or both. At AU, if you don't agree with every political opinion another student does, it often becomes hostile and unpleasant.

Majors: I loved my internship. Everyone has a different experience, it depends on where you apply. The Career Center is awesome at helping you find internships and make your application competitive.

Majors: I'm in SIS, which can be frustrating at times. The advisers are over committed and it can be difficult to receive an answer right away. The freshman year classes are boring, but it improves as you get father into your concentration.

Off-Campus Housing: Housing close to campus is expensive, but less so than the dorms. Splitting an apartment with more people really helps. The buildings are fairly nice and it's worth moving off.

Off-Campus Dining: You're in DC - there are tons of options. Near campus it's easiest to go to Chipotle or Cava, but branch out and try 2 Amy's for some great pizza.

Campus Housing: The dorm atmosphere, especially freshman year on south campus, is really fun. The dorms themselves are older and slightly cramped, but I made my best friends there. Sophomore year you want to get a nice dorm, but it's also cheaper and more convenient to live off campus.

Guys & Girls: There is a lot of diversity on campus. People tend to focus more on academics and interests, which is nice

Local Area: The campus is close to DC so you have the entire city at your disposal, but is secluded in the northwest corner so you can easily get away from the hustle and bustle

3 College Senior

Scholarships: Don't be afraid to call if something goes wrong, oftentimes the paperwork gets mixed up

2 College Student

Parking: spots fill up really quickly; its d.c. but you can find somewhere to park if youre really determined

4 College Student

Administration: the campus is pretty anti-party as were way more focused on academics, but its all done in order to benefit our education

5 College Student

Majors: theres a hiuge variety and double majoring is super easy as most of the requirements for each major can count towards another major

5 College Student

Majors: i love it, its exciting enriching and enlightening

5 College Student

Transportation: its D.C, so basically everywhere you go, youll be going on foot or by bus/metro and if you get the smartrip card its way cheaper than paying an upfront price

5 College Student

Health & Safety: as i said befor the campus at american is all collectively very progressive, and as such as a victim you are far less likely to be blamed for any assault. there is also panic buttons 20 seconds from any pint on campus to prevent such incidents

5 College Student

Diversity: american is crazy diverse. its basically as diverse as all of the students aim to make the world. people of every background and group you could ever think of are here.

5 College Student

Scholarships: the fin aid at american is really great especially if you apply ed. i got what i needed and they even waived the $600 deposit

3 College Student

Greek Life: if youre looking for greek life american is definitely not the place, there isnt a greek row like at other schools and frats/sororities dont have any effect on much

4 College Student

Campus Food: eagle bucks and dining dollars allow you a lot more options as you can spend the eagle bucks at any participating store, and the dining dollars at any food kiosk on campus

4 College Student

Technology: american is a largely online campus, with wifi all through the campus and tech support only an email away

3 College Student

Party Scene: its pretty hard to find a party on campus, its really not a party school. but its also in D.C, and close to other party schools so its not impossible to find a party

5 College Student

Local Area: youre living in D.C. so whatever youre looking for is a bus, metro ride or walk away which is amazing.

3 College Student

Off-Campus Housing: The housing in D.C is pretty expensive in my opinion, I prefer to live on campus as it is cheaper and you can wake up 5 mins before class and still get there on time

5 College Student

Academics: There are tons of places to study, and the professors are always happy to help you

Many students agree that there is something for everyone at AU, and they are rarely ever bored. Though the school’s population is relatively small and has fewer parties compared to state schools, many claim that it is worth it to be in D.C. and the surrounding area.

Upon arrival at AU, the adjustment period can be tough for people not accustomed to an urban setting. However, making friends is quite easy, and even the shyest students will be able to integrate themselves into the small, tight-knit AU community. For the most part, students have no problem expressing themselves socially or academically. It seems that a “work hard, play hard” philosophy best suits the students at American University.
