Transportation: its D.C, so basically everywhere you go, youll be going on foot or by bus/metro and if you get the smartrip card its way cheaper than paying an upfront price

5 College Student

Health & Safety: as i said befor the campus at american is all collectively very progressive, and as such as a victim you are far less likely to be blamed for any assault. there is also panic buttons 20 seconds from any pint on campus to prevent such incidents

5 College Student

Diversity: american is crazy diverse. its basically as diverse as all of the students aim to make the world. people of every background and group you could ever think of are here.

5 College Student

Scholarships: the fin aid at american is really great especially if you apply ed. i got what i needed and they even waived the $600 deposit

3 College Student

Greek Life: if youre looking for greek life american is definitely not the place, there isnt a greek row like at other schools and frats/sororities dont have any effect on much

4 College Student

Campus Food: eagle bucks and dining dollars allow you a lot more options as you can spend the eagle bucks at any participating store, and the dining dollars at any food kiosk on campus

4 College Student

Technology: american is a largely online campus, with wifi all through the campus and tech support only an email away

3 College Student

Party Scene: its pretty hard to find a party on campus, its really not a party school. but its also in D.C, and close to other party schools so its not impossible to find a party

5 College Student

Local Area: youre living in D.C. so whatever youre looking for is a bus, metro ride or walk away which is amazing.

3 College Student

Off-Campus Housing: The housing in D.C is pretty expensive in my opinion, I prefer to live on campus as it is cheaper and you can wake up 5 mins before class and still get there on time

5 College Student

Academics: There are tons of places to study, and the professors are always happy to help you

5 College Student

Academics: As a womens studies major, it was pretty hard to find a school that offered it, and American does this and more. The classes for your major are very in depth and interesting and other classes have much to do with your area of study, so your knowledge can come in hand in your history class as well.

Campus Quality: The rooms are nice and the gym is great, you can do anything that you could think of to stay in shape and there is even an olympic sized swimming pool.

5 College Student

Campus Quality: The student life is great. youre surrounded by people who are working to change the world and being around all of these people, you cant help but want to work hard at your dreams

Weather: Hot in the fall, very rainy and campus gets flooded

2 College Freshman

Athletics: The athletics program is good, but very little student involvement lessens the quality

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Dorm rooms are nice, but if anything goes wrong, the school wont fix it for months at a time... even if the problem is huge (falling ceiling, unusable sinks, leaky windows, flooded rooms, broken doors that won't lock, etc.)

Health & Safety: It is really safe. I feel comfortable walking from dorm to dorm. The health center is quite pricy and doesn't actually do much

5 College Freshman

Academics: International Studies is a notable degree at the school. It is very well-designed and the classed are challenging but rewarding

4 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Very little peer pressure, medium visibility of drugs and alcohol

3 College Freshman

Weather: Hotter than I would like during the summer.

5 College Junior

Diversity: I really love the diversity of my school. There are people from all over the world and each of them have different stories and backgrounds. We are all religiously diverse, some of us have different sexual orientation, but we all share the same political views, which is extremely positive!

Greek Life: It can be quite annoying as all the members of the Greek Life are always close together. they sort of don't allow other people in their games in the quad, for example. You are either a part of them or now. Sometimes I feel like they use it as a way to "buy" friends.

Overall Experience: The university is great! It is extremely environmentally friendly and green. American University is also a great place to network and meet new people. However, it is difficult to make new friends as the majority of the students are in sororities or fraternities with their clicks.

4 College Sophomore

Local Area: Washington DC is wonderful! It's absolutely amazing to be studying at a university that is the nations capital. There are plenty of internship opportunities in the city. Public transportation allows students to explore the city and there lots of sites to see. There always events going on some of which are linked with events at the University is the ideal location to learn and explore. It allows the students to be well-equipped and well-informed with the city. I love Washington DC!

Many students agree that there is something for everyone at AU, and they are rarely ever bored. Though the school’s population is relatively small and has fewer parties compared to state schools, many claim that it is worth it to be in D.C. and the surrounding area.

Upon arrival at AU, the adjustment period can be tough for people not accustomed to an urban setting. However, making friends is quite easy, and even the shyest students will be able to integrate themselves into the small, tight-knit AU community. For the most part, students have no problem expressing themselves socially or academically. It seems that a “work hard, play hard” philosophy best suits the students at American University.
