Online Courses: Learning IT information by an online course helps support the learning platform and gives the student a better understanding of the IT field. Students are required to do all their classes online and be self driven. The course path is written out in the beginning and you are put on this path and know what is required of you, the student, from the beginning. Each class has a good ratio between the instructor to students which give ample time to allow the instructor to give instruction and for the student time to ask questions.

Online Courses: Online courses are very easy for me to use, they allow me time to take care of my everyday busy life. But I still have time for school at night time. The workload is manageable, the professors are nice and easy to reach if needed. Chatting with students in the online chats is fun.

Online Courses: The only difference I see in the online experience is the benefit of doing my schoolwork around my schedule. Otherwise, because of the recorded online chats from instructors, the ability to interact with other students, and the workload, in my opinion, is very close to other traditional classroom settings.

At American Intercontinental University Online, most students are happily suprised with their ability to navigate through the school Web site and find that the various resources are very user-friendly. The faculty, students, and advisors are all accessible at the click of a button. There is a vertical box on the right side of your screen that shows by color who is on the school Web site at the time, and clicking on their name will immediately open a live instant message (IM) box. These IM conversations also feature the ability to invite multiple people to a chat. It's a great way to meet new friends and peers.

AIU Online offers undergraduate and graduate programs at a flexible pace, so students can hold jobs while in class.  Degree programs are offered in business, criminal justice, design, education, information technology, and more. There is an extensive school library, free tutoring services (if requested), multimedia presentations for each course, various clubs, and even a Support Department that provides immediate aid for AIU Online students.

Facts & Statistics

Biggest Surprises
  • Almost all AIU Online students think it is very easy to navigate throughout the school Web site.
  • Attending class is not required!
Required Tech Skills
Computer and Internet access is a definite requirement, as all work is done on the school Web site. Students must be able to use a keyboard, mouse, and complete average Web navigation. Owning or having access to a printer is a bonus, but not a requirement.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
In a typical lecture, the instructor and students all type in a live chat session. Using multimedia links, the instructor can speak over a microphone as well. The instructors hosting these live chats make use of various visual aid resources such as Microsoft PowerPoint, video clips, and their own actual handwriting, all of which are recorded and accessible anytime.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
An AIU Online course is exactly five weeks long, starting on a Monday morning at 12 a.m. CST and ending on a Sunday night at 11:59 p.m. CST. Every week, except during group week, there are two assignments: a discussion board where students respond to instructor prompts, and an individual project.
Online Testing & Grading
Testing is a rarity at AIU Online, so most grades are determined by class activities. Most classes have a standard grading system based on a 100-point scale, and letter grades drop every ten percentage points. For instance, a student needs to score better than 90 percent on an assignment to receive an A.
Did You Know?
  • Students can take a single test to complete a five week course!
  • All completed work, grades, and class chats are recorded and available anytime.
  • Class loads can be set up to include one or two classes at a time.
  • Microsoft Word 2007 Enterprise is sent to students to help them complete their schoolwork.
