3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: My school is pretty decent. It's small so you can develop close relationships with your professors. If you want to party all of the time, this is not the school for you.

Overall Experience: Most of the professors I have so far seem to be truly happy to be teaching, and it's refreshing that the learning environment is warm and welcoming.

Overall Experience: The quality of employers recruiting here is wonderful. I am a Nursing major, and I know that the reputation of this school and the Nursing program it offers are invaluable.

Health & Safety: I always feel safe on campus, and there are plenty of people and resources available if one doesn't feel safe/needs help.

Campus Housing: I'm paying for a triple room with our own bathroom/shower, and it's great to have our own privacy! Unfortunately, the water always seems to come out looking yellow-ish...and I think this is a campus-wide issue.

Greek Life: My sister has just joined a sorority, and she talks about their philanthropic missions frequently. A lot of the Greek clubs try to generate a lot of school spirit throughout the week!

Overall Experience: The small class sizes and the fact that I am dorming on campus have made my experience so far a great one! The students and professors are all friendly as well, which is a change from what I experienced from staff and students closer to New York City!

Athletics: All of the facilities I have used thus far have been clean, well-lit, safe, and spacious!

Academics: THE COURSES OFFERED HERE ARE VERY RELATIVE TO MY CURRICULUM. VERY HAPPY WITHALL MUST COURSES.

Diversity: THE CAMPUS HAS A VERY DIVERSE GROUP OF STUDENTS. EVERYONE SEEMS TO ACCEPT AND GET ALONG WITH EACHOTHER

Drug Safety: ME AND MY FRIENDS ARE NOT INTO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. I DO NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR USAGE.

Party Scene: There are no Greek houses on campus, so fraternity/sport team parties are off campus. I don't go to them but usually everyone goes out on Thursday nights. There are also local clubs and bars that you can go to to have fun. The city is 40 minutes away, so if you don't like frat/baseball team parties or the local bars/clubs, take the train there!

Party Scene: Like I stated before, there are parties off campus but not on campus. Local bars and clubs are not that far, so you can take a car anywhere. Some students party and drink while others don't. Nobody will judge you if you don't so it's not a big deal.

Academics: We have a lot of different majors (you can just look at them on the adelphi website) and many of the professors still work or do research in their fields. For example, an anthropology professor here still travels all around the world to do research and two of the most amazing anatomy professors you'll have are chiropractors and have their own practice. The curriculum is different for each major but you'll probably take prerequisite classes for the first 2 years & then more specific classes concerning your major the last 2 years. The registration process is not complicated at all, but if you do need help, then you can go see your advisor (every student is assigned an advisor). Obviously Adelphi is a college, so you will have to work in order to get a good grade. However, it's not THAT hard. Just follow the syllabus and stay on top of your work in order to get an A.

Diversity: Adelphi is a very diverse university. You'll be accepted no matter what you are. There are a good amount of international students (mostly Asian) who live in Linen Hall. I talk to a few of them, but most of them just stay to themselves. I don't mind them and I don't think anyone else does either. The only annoying thing is that they smoke a lot. There are a ton of students here though and you're free to be friends with whoever.

Health & Safety: Public safety is amazing on campus. They're always walking or driving around and I never feel unsafe. We have a blue light system on campus so if you ever feel unsafe, you can find one of the poles with the blue light (I think theres like 30 - 40 something in total, basically you'll see one from any point on campus) and press the button. Public safety will come to you within 90 seconds. They also do rounds in the residence halls a few times each day, so nothing major ever happens. It's a really safe university.

Overall Experience: Most of the professors are great here. The care about their students and are required to have office hours. The courses are just your typical college classes and the average class size is 20. Most of the classrooms are similar to what classrooms in high school look like. Some look like lecture halls, but you'll never have a class that's more than 40 students. I find smaller classes more comfortable because the professors actually know your name and I'm not afraid to ask questions.

Campus Housing: I'm an out of state student & I don't mind living on campus! It wasn't fun at first (first semester as a freshman) because I didn't know a lot of people or what I could do for fun, but I like it now. The residence halls are pretty nice and all the rooms I've seen are a good size. All 7 halls are a slightly different, but you're allowed to live in any of them regardless of your academic year. The bathrooms are cleaned every morning so they're usually not a problem. Living on campus can be expensive, but being able to walk to class in less than 10 minutes is definitely more convenient than having to drive here every morning. Residential life isn't boring if you make great friends and attend the events that RA's have every week. Students who bring a TV to college get free HBO in their room, which is pretty nice!

Greek Life: I'm not in Greek Life and am not sure if I will be in the future, but it is somewhat popular. I didn't realize how prevalent it was until I actually started taking classes. There are no Greek houses on campus, but you're bound to have a few "sisters" or "brothers" in whichever residence hall you live in. It's also not a big deal because the campus is medium sized, so you'll always see people walking around. They do have parties, but also have a lot of fundraising events around campus. A lot of my friends are in Greek life and a lot of them aren't, so it doesn't really matter what you choose. For the most part, everyone treats everyone else the same and it's just a matter of preference.

Athletics: Adelphi is Division 2 in the NCAA, so sports are definitely prevalent and I can usually tell who is an athlete just by looking at them. Not every single person goes to sporting events (like they do at really big universities), but there is still a good amount of support. I'm not an athlete, but people who are seem to be enjoying their time here, so I'm assuming it's an alright school to play sports at. The gyms and facilities are amazing here. There's a separate gym for athletes and even the non athlete one is really big! There's also a swimming pool, track, 3 basketball/volleyball courts, a field for soccer/field hockey/lacrosse, etc. Adelphi also has free fitness classes like Zumba, kickboxing, yoga, etc. which are fun. Overall, athletics are not bad!

Overall Experience: Overall, Adelphi is a pretty great university and I'm happy here. There are pros and cons to every university, and those are things that all individuals need to consider for themselves. But as a nursing major and an out of state student, I'm fine with the way everything is. Adelphi is in a beautiful wealthy neighborhood and there's never a time where I feel unsafe on campus. There are so many clubs, fitness classes, jobs, etc. to be involved in and the campus is so racially diverse. I personally don't mind the weekends too much because having quiet time allows me to catch up on sleep and Netflix, lol! Plus, Penn Station is only 40 minutes away from campus, so you could be in NYC in under an hour! Also, most of the professors here are great and really do care about their students. The only two things I wish Adelphi would do is 1) lower tuition/give more financial aid & 2) add more vegetarian food options. They're working on adding more food options right now, which I appreciate, but I don't think tuition will go down since it's a private university. Despite that though, I know Adelphi was my only option if I wanted everything on my checklist (diversity, safe town, clubs/campus activities, great nursing program, etc.) and I'm glad I came here. The friends I've made, the professors I've met, and the nursing education I'm receiving outweighs the few negatives :)
