I have only had minor experience with online classes before attending AAU, but I was surprised at how organized and effective they were. It is very well structured and participation in discussion is required so there is a connection built between classmates. The workload is reasonable and the time given to complete readings and projects if sufficient. Media including instructional videos created directly by AAU teachers help immensely in learning how to use required software as well as learning all the techniques presented in the modules. It is not all just reading! Those who need visuals to help them learn will find those videos very helpful.

Being a fine arts major, you have to expect to work hard and for long hours. The first year you go through basics like figure drawing. Every single one of my teachers were kind and dedicated to help everyone from every level. Interestingly enough every single teacher warned my class about the school and it's issues and commercialization. The curriculum is good but you can't take more than four classes, and sometimes for a good reason. If you don't take more than three classes though, expect to graduate in six years. Needless to say after my second semester i found interest in other majors and have since transferred but i've learned a lot from each instructor that i won't forget. Every teacher had kind words to say to each student and one even gave me his book (yes, shameless self promotion) but it was still sweet! The fine art department teachers truly care about the students.

I am an Online Student working toward a BFA in Animation & Visual Effects. I was surprised at how effective the online courses played out and I feel like I got just as much out of it that I would have in an onsite class. Everything is very organized, the time given to complete reading and projects is sufficient, and everything learned is applied in each project. Not only are the concepts presented important, but they are very fun to carry out in your own projects! My experience in these classes has further increased my confidence in my career choice.
