Health & Safety: The Yale shuttle service provides door to door transportation after 6 p.m. for all those afraid to walk. They will also send an officer to escort you on foot to your destination if you are worried. However, the campus is very dangerous and there are a number of assaults each month.

Health & Safety: New Haven is like any other city, it has its not so pretty side. But I think Yale does a great job of taking care of it's students. The free door to door shuttle is a wonderful service, and I use it all the time. It's not perfect I'll admit, but it gets the job done. I've always felt safe and comfortable going out and coming home late knowing I have the shuttle to pick me up. On campus I feel very safe at all times.

Health & Safety: New haven is not the safest place, but the security system is good.

Health & Safety: Each Yale building has multiple blue phones that students can use during an emergency. Escorts are available at night to walk students for short distances as well as door to door shuttle service for longer distances. Yale police are visible on campus and so far I haven't had anything bad happen to me.

Health & Safety: The quality of care is good but it's a far walk from campus, especially in an emergency.

Although New Haven is an urban setting with its share of crime, students agree that they generally feel safe on campus and in town. Nearly all assaults happen off-campus or in less-frequented areas and take place late at night. Graduate students are most often the subjects of robbery or assault, most likely because they tend to live or work on the edges of campus.

Because New Haven is a city, it is easy to end up in a bad part of town simply by walking three blocks in the wrong direction. But you quickly learn what and where these places are and when to avoid them. Yale has its own police force, separate from the New Haven Police Department, and its presence is felt. There are also many services for student safety, such as police escorts to walk you home after late-night study sessions.

Although New Haven can be dangerous, it's normally safe unless you are unwise and walk home alone late at night. Most students agree that the safety services and security are a great resource and advise incoming students to make use of them. As long as you use common sense, there is rarely a reason to feel in danger.
