3 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: There's plenty of restaurants if you feel like driving out to Monroe, Matthews, Indian Trail, or Charlotte. We don't get student discounts at very many places though.

2 College Junior

Campus Dining: There's subway (closes at 8pm) which is literally across campus and away from everything, Einstein's which is in the library, really small and too expensive (students pay more than you'd pay if you went to a real Einstein's location, closes early), the Klondike (10:30am-11pm) which has rude and unpleasant workers and they are usually crowded and inconvenient especially during the day between classes and they basically get everything in there and it's really unhealthy and a lot of people get sick from eating it. There's the cafe which is open at really awkward hours that are hard to remember and the food isn't that great. We were promised a nice restaurant to open last spring but we never got that and we were also promised a chickfila that we never got. Options are very limited and don't taste very good.

Campus Housing: Depending on where you live, it's okay. South Village and Watson Village are the best places to live the rest of the buildings are all dorms and the rooms are small. Also the housing signup process SUCKS.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: it's pretty decent except sometimes campus safety can be pretty slow to respond when you call.

3 College Junior

Greek Life: We have three frats and three sororities. Frat boys are much nicer than sorority girls but for the most part running into Greeks is unavoidable because they have a lot of members usually, especially the girls. Greeks are responsible for holding most of the events on campus and their presence is very noticeable.

Diversity: Black students and non-athletes have it the WORST on campus. The best way to get noticed is to be white, have money or at least look the part, play a sport, or go Greek. Otherwise you're just a space filler and Wingate faculty doesn't seem to care at all. we have a black student union but they are limited in what they are allowed to do and they are required to answer to/get approval from a white advisor who doesn't understand the needs and wants of the black student population. Athletes and Greeks get the best of everything and are at the top of the social pyramid among students and faculty. They get praised around here even when they do the bare minimum to get by.

Academics: I am a communications major and it is one of the worst majors now. Before I got to Wingate, people often bragged about how good the program was but sadly that's not the case anymore. We only have five professors so they have to teach several different courses each semester. This is good for making connections with professors but it's bad for the vibe of the classroom. It is painfully obvious to us that the faculty in our department is overworked and getting worn out. People don't even take our major seriously anymore. The workload for most comm classes isn't bad at all though so that's a plus.

3 College Junior

Academics: Most people are taking about 15-18 hours a semester and often complain about how much work they have. On top of that, there is a long list of courses that are required for each student as part of the "university core", like GPS for example. There are six of the courses totaling 18 hours and the credits don't transfer if you switch schools. Most people see the classes as a waste of time. I know from personal experience that a lot of people cheat their way through a lot of courses by taking classes with their friends or passing down old assignments when they finish the course. Lastly, students make their own study spaces because we only have one library with very limited space. Most people just study in their own rooms because it's inconvenient to go anywhere else.

Local Atmosphere: The campus is open, too open. More than once we've had to go on lockdown because something was going on in the community and we were in danger. In one incident there was a shooting and the gunman ran onto our campus. In another incident, an elderly man ended up being arrested for trying to pick up girls on campus. All of the streets on campus are main streets in Wingate so it's easy for people to just park and come on campus without anyone noticing. Pretty much everything we need requires us to drive up 74 and into Monroe because the town of Wingate has practically nothing in it except for the school.

2 College Junior

Scholarships: There are very few scholarships. Besides the athletic scholarships, the only scholarships I know of are the merit-based awards that range from about $250 to $750 I think, maybe less. Also there's the bulldog award or something like that that is awarded to one male and female every year. There are few opportunities for free aid and if there are more, they are poorly advertised.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: Most parties take place in South Village or Watson Village on Saturday nights. For some reason, no one really parties on Fridays. Parties are usually fun but they can get crowded and there's usually a lot of segregation - there's the black people parties, the Greek parties, track parties, LAX parties, etc. Sometimes things mix up but not very often so people usually end up partying with the same people every weekend. The party scene would probably be better if Res Life would back off a little and actually let us have fun sometimes.

3 College Junior

Greek Life: There is Greek housing and they do play a little role on campus but they are definitely not a huge impact on campus.

1 College Junior

Athletics: Our school lacks school spirit. Not a lot of people attend games and support our athletes.

1 College Junior

Nightlife: The best place to go to have fun is Charlotte. It is about 45 minutes away and as college student not everyone has money every weekend to enjoy themselves and have fun.

2 College Junior

Facilities: There is only one gym and only one cafeteria to eat at. There is only two places on campus to get food, there is only one library.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: I receive the financial aid I am suppose to get but it is not a lot and the school is very expensive.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: The class sizes are small and can be very interactive and helpful. The professors are very intelligent and try to help you.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: I have heard people get good jobs and they have successful careers.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: The people are nice and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing.

3 College Junior

Academics: They offer internships and guide you in your major if it is accounting but try to convince you to attend their graduate school

2 College Junior

Academics: The workload is a lot.

1 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: The school does not allow student to live off campus

3 College Junior

Guys & Girls: The people are precept and very nicely dress which is good. You do not usually see people in pajamas or sweat pants.m

2 College Junior

Campus Housing: It could be better because it is very expensive and it is small, dirty, and cheaply made.

4 College Junior

Health & Safety: Campus safety is always around and they even having the police drive by every once in awhile. The wingate police is across the street so wouldn't take them long to respond to an emergency if needed.
