Wilkes University has a solid reputation for a good sports program. The athletes at Wilkes are also academically some of the best students on campus. With a great coaching staff, filled with many past star Colonels, there is superb leadership. As far as team and school spirit, there are a few games which really rev up the Colonels. There is a great basketball rivalry with the University of Scranton, so those games are usually exciting. And each year, a football game against cross-town rivals King's College has both teams duking it out for the Mayor's Cup. For most of the away games, there is bus transportation provided. Wilkes has cheerleaders who are present at all games to get the crowds riled up as well.
As far as coverage from the local media, the Colonels are covered quite often, for whatever sport is in season. The Wilkes radio station, 90.7 WCLH, broadcasts the football and basketball games live. Wilkes also offers a host of intramural activities, as listed earlier. This gives athletes the chance to play other sports, stay in shape in the off-season, as well as give people not involved in varsity sports the chance to play. There are also sports clubs, like men's lacrosse and the crew club. There are plenty of ways to get involved in sports and stay active at Wilkes.
