4 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Unlimited dining at any dining hall. Buffet style. Lots of variety, though they don't always get the ethnic foods quite right.

4 College Freshman

Campus Dining: Nearly everybody is on an open meal plan. It's great because you don't have to worry about only taking a certain amount of food. You can take as much food as you want. The menus are uneven. There is usually always something decent though.

Campus Dining: I thought the food was delicious and plentiful. There are no limits on how much you are allowed to eat. And the dining halls are vegetarian- and special diets-friendly.

Campus Dining: There are so many options and the food is quite good! We even have a fully vegetarian/kosher dining hall.

1 College Freshman

Campus Dining: The food is disgusting. Many people love the food, but I come from a home where we eat healthy and we use a lot of delicious spices. So eating the bland, sometimes questionable food that is served is puke worthy. Most of the time I have to resort to eating a bagel, bread, rice, ice cream, salad (MOST of the time I have to eat this, even when I am sick of it!) or whatever else I know for sure will taste normal.

The dining halls are pretty darn good. Everyone has their complaints, but it's possible to eat well at Wellesley—and compared to many colleges, to eat very well. Students really like the dining hall workers, and certain workers, such as Pasta Bob in Tower, have gained semi-celebrity status. The on-campus bakery makes tasty Rice Krispie treats and fresh bread.

Though the meal plan is very open in some ways—students can eat as much as they like at any time during the day, and most dining halls don't keep track of guest meals—there are no options other than the dining halls. But with the food selection at Wang, there are more satisfied students who have more flexibility to the meal plan, and there are more options for students dissatisfied by the dining halls. However, unless it's for medical reasons, no one is allowed to opt out of the meal plan or lessen the number of meals they pay for per week.

Did You Know?
  • Each dining hall hosts one theme dinner a month. Themes include: Harry Potter Night, complete with bubbling cauldrons of soup; World Series Night, featuring chilidogs, hot pretzels, and ice cream sandwiches; and Italian Night, adorned with checkered tablecloths and candles.
  • Sunday Sundaes are a much-revered campus-wide tradition. Come Sunday night, all dining halls set out trays of M&M's, sprinkles, strawberries, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. Students line up, flex their scooping muscles, and dig in.
  • Midnight Breakfast in Bates is another beloved tradition. Twice a year, during pre-finals reading period, Bates Dining Hall offers up fruit, eggs, sausage, French toast, and hash browns to stressed-out students. There's music and some kind of a photo novelty, so you can look at that keychain photo a couple weeks later and admire the panic behind that, "It'll all be fine, at least I've got fried food" smile.
