3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: It is easy to get away with stuff if you are quiet or not obvious. Staying in rooms is usually fine. It is really easy to get away from main campus too, such as in a field or down a trail. When you do get in trouble, they give you a chance to redeem yourself at a meeting and get out of it.

Campus Strictness: There is a lot of freedom on campus. Of course underage drinking and smoking illegals is not tolerated but if you are smart about it you can get away with it. There are regulations for having parties but again it is fairly easy to throw one. If you respect the authorities they usually will not go around looking for you.

2 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: I mean pubsafe is hard on freshman. Don't smoke too close to the road or where everyone is being super loud and bright. Keep it lowkey... after freshman year anything goes.. smoking in dorms, general consensual wildness... unless you're hardcore dealing the police will never get involved.

3 College Junior

Campus Strictness: Ridiculous Policies – Strictness in your dorm depends on your resident advisors/directors, most of whom are students. They are extremely strict about underage drinking and drug use in the freshmen dorms. As of now, of-age drinking is restricted to one's own room (don't get caught with a beer in common areas, no matter the ages of those around). Campus officers are extremely rude to students. Parking violations are also enforced strictly, and the appeals board rarely ever appeals a ticket, even if valid reasons are given.

Campus Strictness: No. During orientation our peer group leader basically told us we could get away with anything as long as it wasn't smoking inside the dorm room. People go out on the trails or by the river or to the picnic table 10 FT FROM THE RDs house and smoke pot. During orientation when the campus was basically 99% first year students a huge party was held with copious amounts of alcohol and loud music. No one got in trouble for anything, even though a party like that should have been a huge red flag because it could not have been that size without a considerable number of underaged kids drinking.

Warren Wilson prides itself on its more realistic approach to campus discipline. RAs and RDs are likely to look the other way of minor violations if no one’s safety is compromised but won’t hesitate to intercede respectfully if a resident is being unsafe or unhealthy. You are more likely to have a sit-down talk with residence life staff than you are to be written up. If you are written up, you head to a more serious talk with the Dean of Students.

There is a desire by the staff to work through problems with the student rather than punish and ignore them. No one in the student life offices wants to get anyone expelled, and most mediations lead to appointments with the counselor on staff that deals with substance abuse as opposed to punishment-style actions. That being said, there are some issues that require police intervention, suspension, or expulsion, and the safety, security, and health of students at Wilson is by no means compromised by the administration or the students. Violations that should be taken seriously are, and more minor transgressions are treated in a more lenient manner.
