Tuition & Financial Aid at Vista College - El Paso: The office staff at the financial office are really helpful when it comes to helping you apply for financial aid. They do explain terms and contracts. They work even harder to collect on the loans that were offered through the school. There really isn't a grace period, you are given a week from the start of school before requiring monthly payments on those loans. If you miss a payment they do pull you out of class, two payments they advice you are at risk of being denied access to class, and three well they ask you top pay first before being allowed to return. They do state that they offer waivers for payments while in school but that they are frowned upon and for special circumstances.

Student Body at Vista College - El Paso: The typical students are ok, some straight out of high school, others a GED program and all looking for career advancement. Most students there ,like myself, are low income, heavily relying on financial aid, and school loans to finance the degree program we've chosen. Most students attending at my school come a Hispanic/Latino descent (like myself) and are mostly Spanish speakers. The only languages I've heard being spoken at school are English and Spanish. In regards to diversity challenges, I have seen none thus far.

Academic Flexibility at Vista College - El Paso: I personally work graveyards, our school week starts on Monday morning (8am-1pm) meaning I start Monday morning , don't get a chance to sleep until Tuesday after 1:00 pm. They offer am and pm classes, but pm classes conflict with my graveyard schedule. I am enrolled in the Medical assisting/assistant program and some courses give very little instruction as in example CPT coding, we are told use your book, and each other, this is what code looks like, and how to find it in the book. We are not given the history of coding, the process of what is coded and where or why. What is worst is that we are giving the Medical Billing and Coding BEFORE the medical terminology course, meaning you're left on your own to figure out what disease/illness your are trying to code or even what it deals with. With cell phones and laptops not being allowed in class room you are reduced to begging the teacher for help as you have no other tools to identify, define, or establish the meaning of an illness so it could be classified.

Campus Resources at Vista College - El Paso: Our school does not offer anything extra curricular, no student centers, libraries, or any campus activities. The only thing close to a campus activity would be the medical club. A club that accepts all applicants, and basically serves to fund raise for graduation cap and gown costs. The medical club does not usually convene outside school hours, or in support for the community , community activities/events, or encourage any real community involvement whatsoever.

Campus Resources at Vista College - El Paso: The usage of on site computers require active enrollment in a computer related class, or usage before or after regular school hours. For the most part internet speeds are usually acceptable. Wireless access is not available at my school. Printing is only allowed for school related work, and if there is printing paper available, and the printers are working (in my personal experience this was a very common lingering issue). Any personal equipment such as cell phones, laptops , and/or tablets are not allowed with the classroom. Also no electronic materials are not allowed unless provided for by our school and approved for our specific degree program.

Online Courses at Vista College - El Paso: Online courses for my degree program aren't available unless for a catastrophic event as major illness/disability and only for 20 weeks out of the whole degree program. I have never had the option to take online classes , instead we are required to attend school regularly within a classroom setting.

Academic Experience at Vista College - El Paso: I'm going through an accelerated program for Medical Assisting/Assistant , its mostly reading out of a book with teachers telling stories about their careers within the medical field. My School has two computer labs, but during school hours are teaching classes there. Technologically speaking they don't offer the best equipment available , and encounter technical issues sometimes. The IT representative does trial and error, and/or calls third parties for technical assistance when attempting to troubleshoot/resolve technical issues. We rarely get any valuable insight, or lectures of what it is to be a medical assistant. We are always fighting with time constraints to get the material covered. Working full time and going to school full time has been hectic, most teachers offer a syllabus, and allow a week to turn in all work that is due, but not all. Some teachers do assign whole chapters to be due the next day, which means having to go without sleep sometimes due to family, and work obligations. Based on what we have covered the information seems a tab outdated, despite getting brand new books. The registration process was a bit long , but thorough, but my college does have genuine people that are willing to go the extra mile for assistance. Some teachers also offer assistance and/or tutoring despite having passed and moved on from their class. The program director at school is pleasant lady, always available to listen to comments or concerns and even go above and beyond for students.

Academic Experience at Vista College - El Paso: Despite the aforementioned difficulties, I still believe attending my school and program were a good choice; It does require plenty of flexibility to adapt to rapid changes. My degree program does offer some hands on clinical competencies, as well as an externship requirement. An externship assigned through the school allows us the opportunity to work in a real medical office environment that allows for an expansion of new learned set of skills.
