Virginia Western Community College Reviews
Rating 3.72 out of 5 513 reviews
My overall experience at Virginia Western was a rollercoaster adventure. How I ended up at Virginia Western in the first place because I withdrew from Virginia Tech as a first-year student. It felt like I didn't fit in Tech's environment nor I felt like I wasn't accepted by the students there. I know you're probably thinking, "Well you didn't give it some weeks or months", but I did. Before beginning the fall semester at Tech, I stayed on campus from July to the beginning of August to do a summer Upward Bound program that required me to temporarily live on campus. I still didn't feel like I belonged, but I pushed the loneliness feelings to the side and studied through the summer by myself. After I withdrew from Tech, I felt like I was a failure and when I first stepped foot on campus at Virginia Western, I had a feeling of uncertainty. After my first semester at Virginia Western, I felt connected with my classmates and my professors as well. I felt like I belonged.
My overall experience at Virginia Western has been bittersweet. The staff has been helpful, but some of my professors were not. My professors are confident about the material, while some do not have a love for teaching. I was fortunate enough to have great professors who have pushed me intellectually. Virginia Western Community College is great for transfer students, those who want to revisit their education, or those who want to complete a degree. They have useful resources to help you succeed. The environment is clean and friendly; they offer many extracurricular activities, clubs, and social activities. I would not trade this experience for anything else.
Let me start by saying that I was so excited to be in the Medical Lab Tech program at VWCC. I felt my life was going in the right direction. That all came to an end the second week of classes. Another student struck me for no reason in the hallway. I was talking to another student and was struck in the back of the head by another student. VWCC did nothing to the other student. They dismissed it due to the other students Mom is an instructor there. That is the first incident that happened. The second is more concerning; however, VWCC does not agree. I took anatomy and physiology distance learning. The first couple of weeks were fine; however, went downhill afterwards. Professor only posted random YouTube videos for Lab Lectures. Mind you, these lectures were NOT her own. Reported both these concerns and VWCC did nothing to rectify either concern. Please be aware that they only care about the money. They do NOT care about students success or future. Go to New River. Beware!
