Overall Experience: Everything about the school takes away from the mostly excellent professors. In the end the administration of the school will leave you feeling like you were just used for money with absolutely no concern about the very future you entrusted them with.

College Freshman

Career Services: I am a current student. Post-grad seems like a pipe dream at this point.

2 College Freshman

Campus Resources: Those that we have are average, and the rest are non-existent.

1 College Freshman

Campus Resources: Lab software is routinely broken. Wireless coverage is spotty with frequent outages. Network speed is bad, to give a point of reference, you won't be able to watch a video on Youtube, even on the lowest quality.

A computer is absolutely required, as are many pieces of software which are not listed as requirements. While these softwares are alleged to be provided by school labs, these labs are not well maintained. The person whose job that was left the school over 6 months previous, and the school has not hired a replacement.

2 College Freshman

Tuition & Financial Aid: Overpriced considering the institution's failure to fulfill its advertising.

I would break it down like this. The professor's are generally worth the money on a class to class basis, but all other aspects of attending VWCC are definitely not.

4 College Freshman

Student Body: Very diverse student body, which is something I truly enjoy.

One thing to note I have noticed, is the deplorable state of access for handicapped individuals. In a wheelchair, and need to go to the library, but the elevator is broke? I hope you brought someone to carry you up.

2 College Freshman

Facilities: No student center with workout equipment as advertised.

School spends millions on new buildings, but the old ones are fine. The money would be far better spent on virtually any other aspect of the school.

3 College Freshman

Academic Experience: I really do enjoy many of my professors, but overall the experience has been negative due to the terrible manner in which the school is run, the lack of accountability in school administration, the abhorrent class schedules, the unreliability of class availability, etc.

In the end it is very sad that the hard work of so many good professors and adjuncts is undone in that manner, and the school would rather pay millions to construct unneeded buildings than to pay the educators what they are worth.

Academic Experience: Seems like we keep answering the same questions here.

Beyond terrible administrators, mostly great professors. - Virginia Western Community College in a nutshell.

Academic Flexibility: Virginia Western's big spiel is on being a feeder school to the universities in Virginia. They advertise a seamless process that is designed to expedite education, ease transfer, and do so at a reduced cost.

After having attended there for six semesters, in my opinion, it is false advertising. Class availability is sketchy. There is virtually no communication between departments in regard to class scheduling, so that very often a person pursuing X degree cannot take these classes required as their times overlap. Some required classes are only offered once a year, and if you cannot take it, or don't do well, you will then be forced to wait a full year in order to do so. While there are many excellent professors and adjuncts, there are also many who are not, but the school does not have any accountability in this area, so if you happen to get one that doesn't have a clue, you can kiss your money goodbye, and plan on taking the class again next time.

Rather than invest in staff, the school routinely invests in unnecessary buildings, the construction of which is done during school hours, and during the school semester which routinely disturbs and interferes with the education of students.

The school advertised a student center with work out equipment, yet this building was torn down before I started, and this service was not compensated for in other ways.

The transfer process is pretty absent. I do not feel that attending VWCC has aided in transferring to any university.

The IT department of the school leaves much to be desired. In order to not have to raise their cost of attendance estimate, VWCC does not list any software as "required." If they were to require software, they would then have to require a computer to run it on, and this would in turn raise the cost estimate. While they are not listed as required, they absolutely are because the software provided in the labs does not work, and so you can either take a 0, pirate it, or buy it.

Online Courses: Has this website considered that a person may not have taken any online classes at all? I don't have any plans to do so in the future either. Why would I pay the same amount to sit at home, and lose the ability to interact with an instructor on a face to face basis?

Overall Experience: It is convenient, esthetically pleasing, somewhat small and offered the courses I was looking for. Teachers are knowledgeable.

3 College Junior

Academic Experience: Some of the classes needed for this major have been removed due to the circumstances of the program coming to a close in 2015. Internships are available and I am looking forward to the internship this fall.

3 College Junior

Academic Experience: All professors/teachers that I have encountered have been very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their curriculum.

Workload has not been overwhelming, there are special study programs and help programs if needed.

Upon registering everyone was eager and willing to help in any way needed.

Fairly extensive academic program available. Very newly updated nursing education center.

4 College Junior

Academic Flexibility: Easy to arrange classes to work & home schedule. I am a single mom with 2 children at home.

The teachers are very knowledgeable and the classes are relatively small which makes learning easier and '

more personal.

3 College Freshman

Campus Resources: we have a basketball team. im not sure if we have any other sport related activities.

3 College Freshman

Campus Resources: the computer labs are pretty decent. the school has planty of computers. but the printing process is a hassel because of the WEPA system. you have to use a WEPA card or bank card to access it.

3 College Freshman

Facilities: just hallways and buildings. no housing or dining areas.

Community colleges get a bad rap for being below par in the academic world. This perception contributes to the people who tend not to take their education at Virginia Western seriously. Those who are willing to put forth the effort to get involved in their classes, join clubs, and get to know their professors and classmates find that their experience is both challenging and rewarding. Despite the stigma that surrounds Virginia Western, the majority of professors is extremely qualified and makes classes interesting as well as edifying. The student body is definitely not your traditional mix of students. People of all ages and all walks of life come to VWCC to better their chances in the academic and professional worlds. Regardless of your specific reason for coming to Virginia Western, the school’s slogan, “We’ll get you there,” is extremely appropriate. It is widely acknowledged that most people are only at VWCC for a short period of time. Knowing this, the entire staff is dedicated to making your experience as memorable and fulfilling as possible, while getting you to the University you are hoping to attend or the job that you are hoping to land.

Virginia Western is nestled within the Roanoke Valley, surrounded by the incredibly beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Roanoke is a fairly developed city with a decent downtown club scene, and places to shop and eat are abundant. The mountains provide an endless array of activities year-round, such as hiking, swimming, and boating on Smith Mountain Lake, and camping to name a few. Virginia Western is truly what you make of it. Take the time to make long-lasting friendships and get involved in the Virginia Western community, and you will find that VWCC is a worthy investment in your future.
