1 College Sophomore

Parking: Always difficult to find a spot, and once you think you've found one, you get a ticket.

Academics: Professors are usually very knowledgeable and accessible, and those who aren't are part of a very small minority.

Campus Dining: The food options are getting much better thanks to the New Rand dining hall, but there aren't many options around campus. Rand is pretty much the central go-to place for food

Guys & Girls: Girls are a lot more attractive than guys, so it makes it harder for girls to find guys. I personally do not care for the guys at Vanderbilt. Usually pretty stuck-up and douchey.

Drug Safety: Most students participate in drinking, but that's usually the extent of it. Sure, there are people who use coke, and a considerable amount of students who use weed, but it seems pretty under control.

5 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I did not qualify for financial aid, but received a full-tuition merit scholarship. Most of my friends have received aid and Vanderbilt is usually very generous with their financial aid packages.

Health & Safety: We get emails a lot about robberies on and off campus, which are disconcerting. Sexual assault is also a concern. However, the majority of the time I feel safe and have never personally had anything bad happen to me while I was here.

Campus Strictness: The Vanderbilt Police are a joke and RAs are usually pretty easygoing. I've seen RAs partying with their hall mates even though they were underage.

Computers: For the most part, you can use the wireless internet anytime, anywhere. There are some computers on campus but most people just bring their laptops.

Academics: Very challenging but rewarding. The professors are wonderful and you learn a lot.

Off-Campus Dining: There are a few options around campus that are good, but you have to branch out into Nashville to find the best restaurants.

Campus Housing: Since being here, they've made major improvements to existing housing and are building new housing that is state-of-the-art.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: It's very competitive getting in and it restricts your social circle once you're in. Only certain frats and sororities hang out with each other.

Weather: It's beautiful during the summer and spring, but it rains during the fall and winters and can get very cold. I'm from the north, and I feel like I'm still in the north with how cold it gets in the winter.

Transportation: Vandy Vans only run from 5pm-5am so there aren't many options to getting around campus during the day. The public bus only runs on the streets outside campus so they aren't the best option, unless you want to go somewhere off campus

Nightlife: Frat parties aren't that big per se, but a large portion of the student body attends them so they're pretty fun. Downtown and Demonbreun bars are always a good time.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: There's a mix of every type of scene in Nashville, so you can always find something to do and find people to do it with.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Most of the options are expensive around campus, so you have to do a lot of searching to find more affordable options.

2 College Sophomore

Diversity: The WASPs pretty much have control over the campus.

Majors: It's pretty easy to declare the major you want, and you can even create your own major if you want.

Majors: The HOD program gives you a lot of opportunity for real-world experience, most notably the internship program.

5 College Sophomore

Scholarships: From what I hear, almost everyone here is on some form of financial aid. Vandy wants you to come here if you get in, and they'll make it happen

Campus Housing: Branscomb and some of the older upperclassmen dorms suck, but Kissam opening should make a lot of people happy this next year.

Academics: Top of the notch academics--period. Great professors and students are brilliant and driven to keep learning.

Athletics: Vanderbilt is an SEC school and we are devoted to the future success of our sports teams. Football and basketball are two of the greatest things about Vandy; athletics unite the entire campus with the local community and with alumni. Sports games are an essential part to the SEC experience. Go Dores.

Any student beginning a college career will pass through the phase of questioning his or her decision. For Vanderbilt students, this phase is a short one. The beauty and excitement of campus quickly pushes away any negative thoughts. Southern hospitality is alive and strong around Vanderbilt, and for those out-of-towners, it’s usually a welcome surprise. Taking the time to meet new people, whether they are Southern natives or people from across the country, will make the transition from high school to college a lot smoother. Finding your niche at any college is the most important thing to having a successful four years. Vanderbilt is big enough to accommodate almost anyone’s desires and small enough to make this campus feel like home for the years you spend here.

While Vanderbilt has a lot of positive qualities, it isn’t the best choice for everyone. Choosing Vanderbilt means choosing to be in a situation where name-brand clothes and high-end cars have a certain amount of importance. Most students come from white upper-class families, and while they may not all fit the stereotype of wealthy snobs, money is in abundance for most on campus. More than anything, however, choosing Vanderbilt means choosing an extremely difficult and intense academic institution. You will pull your share of all-nighters, sit through any number of obvious “weed-out courses,” stress out over harsh grading curve, and panic when professors refuse to move deadlines despite countless other exams and papers. But thankfully, Vanderbilt embodies a work-hard, play-hard lifestyle. The second you make it through the more hellacious periods of school, there will be countless opportunities to throw all cares aside and enjoy your time at Vanderbilt.
