Greek Life: Greeks Suck – I never party, but the Greek people are always drunk and scare me when I have to go out at night to go to the library or get food. We seriously need to bring Prohibition back.

Nightlife: The Drunks Are Gross – I hate parties and partying. The people who participate in it are disgusting and irresponsible. One girl on my floor smoked weed and drank excessively, and one morning I woke up to find vomit all over the bathroom. That was one of the grossest things I have ever seen.

Campus Dining: Residential Dining Halls – Cheap food, but it tastes awful. The food is all greasy and when they attempt to make ethnic food, it is bland and does not resemble what it is supposed to taste like.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: School Strictness – I would say the strictness is probably low if anything. However, there usually isn't much trouble at our school.

Off-Campus Dining: Dining Options – There are a few places to eat. Most are chain restaurants, and the rest are either taverns or "mom and pop" joints. The food is usually good, but the variety is limited.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: The Farther the Cheaper – The closer to campus the more expensive an appartment will inevitably be. But if you are willing to drive or better yet take use the free bus provided by UW you can find some cheap appartments that are in good neighborhoods.

Facilities: Libraries Are Amazing – The Libraries at the UW provide you with so many different options, from study environement to resources provided you will find what you need. The south student Union is almost too amazing. Just finished this 94.8 million dollar structure has a state of the art movie theatre that shows free movies, at least 3 fire places, a climbing wall and a bowling alley. I hope to take full advantage of it and so do thousands of other students.

Weather: Like a Box of Chocolates: Who Knows What You Are Gonna Get – Wisconsin weather can be very unpredictable. Especially in fall and spring. It will be nice for a few days and then bitterly cold the next few. Winters are long and snowy but students are able to turn them into fun, a.k.a. the Bascom Hill Snowball Fight!

3 College Student

Diversity: Wide Variety – While the majority of students are white there is a good-sized fraction of students hailing from Asia. Unfortunately the African American fraction of the student body is not nearly as prevalent.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Chadbourne Hall – I lived at Chadbourne my freshman year, and it was the dorm in-between partying and studying. It also had the best location on campus. The dining hall is one of the best on campus as well. I would definitely recommend living in a dorm freshman year.

Health & Safety: The school tries really hard to promote safety and security on campus. There are various programs like SafeRide and SafeWalk that ensure safety during the night. There is a lot of campus/city police officers out on the streets on weekends as well.

4 College Freshman

Academics: Mathematics Major – The workload for the Mathematics major is quite tough, but is enjoyable if you love the subject. All of my professors are very knowledgeable, helpful and carry about my success. There are also a lot of focus options within the Mathematics major. I am exploring the Computer Science focus.

Local Atmosphere: Lots to Do Here – The atmosphere at Madison is awesome, especially for sports fans. Game days are really fun. Everybody will be wearing red across the whole campus, which is really big. You can always get a ticket to the game from someone on the street but if it is too expensive there are several awesome restaurants where lots of people go to watch. State street has the best food ever! There is every type of food you could possibly imagine. There is a lot going on on this campus. Student organizations have organized film festivals and invited poets like Billy Collins to come read. There is a new climbing wall and bowling ally in the new Union South. It is a big party school, though and it can be hard to make friends if you aren't interested in that. Then again there are tons of student organizations to join.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: Easy Peasy – It took awhile for me to get all my materials submitted, but I knew EXACTLY what I was getting for financial aid less than a week after that. The financial aid advisors are fantastic and extremely helpful.
The only reason I give it an A- is because the office requires redundant information that was available on my FAFSA which is just annoying to have to send out.

Facilities: Something for Everyone – There are AWESOME venues for concerts and performances both on and off campus. Madison is a great city for the performing arts and the entertainment ranges from indie-rock bands to off-Broadway touring productions.
The academics at UW are definitely different from other UW campuses. Here, almost every professor has engaged in some sort of ground-breaking research. Many undergraduates will participate in some kind of research during their time here. There are SO many programs that help you get involved.
The representation of students on campus is greatly varied. There are not just engineering majors, or science majors, or classical humanities majors. Here, you will find everything from Music Performance and Dance Majors to Social Work Majors to Chemical Engineering Majors to Biochemistry Majors to Art Education Majors to Wildlife Ecology Majors. There are students who work on campus, off campus, and students who don't work. UW is the ultimate place to be if you want to experience everything college has to offer.

Drug Safety: Professional Party School – If you're looking for a party at UW, chances are, you'll find one. Badgers are notorious for partying hardy but still getting kick-butt GPAs. You can definitely get involved, but there are plenty of people who choose not to drink and still have a great time here.
Drugs are available if that's your thing, but peer pressure in the context of marijuana or other such drugs is minimal. No one thinks down on you if you don't.
Enforcement of underage drinking and of illegal drug usage goes by the rule that if you're not doing anything stupid, you PROBABLY won't get caught. That's not to say that it doesn't happen though.

Scholarships: Stressed but in the End It Works – For an incoming freshman, I was very stressed as to how much financial aid I would recieve. The process went fairly smooth, but took forever to decide how much aid I would finally recieve. i would suggest keeping all your papers in one folder to maintain organization and to call the Financial Aid office with any questions you have, no matter how trivial you may think they are.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: Many Options – There are tons of options of getting around Madison. For one theres the amazing bus lines that run almost 24/7. Campus is huge but you can get about anywhere by walking, biking, or bus. Buses are free for students and are the main form of transportation. There is also the SAFE ride/walk program for those students who need help getting back to campus late at night.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Wide Variey – On campus you can find any type of person you could imagine. There is no shortage of attractive guys and girls which is kind of amazing when you think of all the different ways that people are attracted to one another. Anyone can find someone here, be it the hot athlete or the cute geek next door, the high maintenance girls to the low-key hippies.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Dont Ask Dont Tell – The police force here are not strict unless they catch one person walking down the street with a beer. But that is most of the time the persons own fault for not thinking. As long as you keep your head down and dont make an idiot of yourself, your golden.

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: There are a lot of very nice Greek communities out there. The most well known are the frats here. Most are ok but some of them are not the best people to hang out with. Stay away from frats in madison unless you know the people well.

5 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Madison is one of the friendliest colleges I have been to. You can walk down the street and get a smile from most people you pass, as long as they are not even in a hurry. But even then, they'll sometimes smile. There is always something to do, with the new Union South opening recently there are pool tables and bowling allies, and even a movie theater. If US is too crowded you can go to Union North where you can sit outside on a nice warm day and listen to live music while enjoying the lake breeze. Apart from that, the academics here are wonderful. Yes its hard but yes its worth it. A degree from Wisconsin is well known and sought after amongst the employees out there today.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Coasties Galor – There are an excessive amount of coasties at this school who love dressing in the most obnoxious ways possible - leggings and short t-shirts. and then they have the nerve to complain about being cold. how about you put on some clothes?

Campus Housing: I have never lived on campus at my university for one reason: COST. My freshman year I lived in one of the most expensive apartment complexes just off campus, and it still cost less than what my friends who were staying in the dorms were paying. Yikes!

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Awesome Advisors! I came into this university with absolutely no idea what I wanted to major in - well, that's not exactly true, I just wanted to major in everything. The cross-college advising staff was excellent. They really helped me narrow down the fields that I wanted to go into while still managing to get general education credits out of the way. Now, with two declared majors, I feel ready to tackle my last two years here!

Students put a lot of time and energy into their undergraduate education. Luckily for those at UW, many feel it has been a positive experience. The college atmosphere, expansive campus, and intense academics are only some of the reasons students enjoy UW so much. Students feel they are able to form relationships with other students, as well as their professors. Furthermore, UW leaves them prepared for their future.

An individual’s undergraduate experience is one of the most exciting times in their lives. It is often the first time they are away from parents and making serious decisions about their future. Therefore, it is essential to pick the best university to spend these busy years at. UW offers amazing academics, an inviting atmosphere, and energetic student body. Its location geographically makes it comfortable as well as gorgeous. The facilities are very accommodating, as is the transportation system. Though like any school, there are things that can be improved upon or changed. Parking remains a prevalent issue, for instance. Fortunately, though, issues such as diversity and improvements to the quality of the dorm food are being addressed. Students generally leave the school feeling satisfied and prepared for what’s to come. Wherever you decide to spend your undergraduate years, definitely consider the University of Wisconsin as a practical, exciting, and fulfilling option.
