5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Rated the hottest campus in America of 2014, as with any college campus there is all sorts of different people, a nice variety.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Very competitive, with the exception of the math department the professors are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I just switched my major from chemistry to food science but I am excited to see what the program has to offer.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: State street offers every cuisine possible at a great price, and there is plenty of options open until 3 am. Instead of just being able to order a pizza after a night out there is chinese food, subs, mexican and more open late. The food carts also provide a fun cheap option of very unique styles of food such as indonesian and jamaican, but if you are looking for something more familiar there is a Wendy's and a Chipotle right up the street.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: People are going to drink in college wether they are underage or not, the police approach is to make sure everyone is safe, not to go around busting people for fun.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: Transferring to CALS felt like I was coming home. Unlike in the College of Letters and Sciences, the advisors have less students to counsel and are more knowledgeable about the majors in the college. Since letters and sciences has such a wide variety of majors it is difficult to get needed information. CALS feels like a family and I know they really care about helping me succeed.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: I recently transferred into the food science program in March of last year, so I have not had a lot of experience with it yet, but my advisor is great and they have several resources for jobs, internships, and study abroad programs.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: The only downfall of Madison is the snowy weather, if it was sunny all year round there is no doubt in my mind that it would be the best college in America.

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: I love the city of Madison, the homeless people are a little scary in the summer but the whole atmosphere is amazing and the scenery with the two lakes is breathtaking.

5 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I absolutely love my sorority and feel so fortunate to have joined. I cannot say I am knowledgeable about the rush process for fraternities, but the process for sororities is very simple and majority of people end up happy. Greek life isn't just about the partying, there is philanthropy events, a shoulder to cry on, and a way to get involved on campus.

Health & Safety: Anyone can get into the dorms there is not very high security. I am from a small town and would not think twice about letting someone in behind me to get into the dorm, and once they're in it would not be very hard to do something bad. There is also a lot of acts of violence on langdon, and the police presence should be stronger late at night. Also, safe walk only runs until 1 am which makes it essentially useless.

Scholarships: I am not very familiar with financial aid because I did not take out any loans this semester, my roommate however did and she said it was very easy.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: The weather in Madison is wonderful in the summer and autumn months. The university is surrounded by bike baths and parks, so outdoor campus activities are plentiful, and study sessions can take place outside. This makes for a very active and energizing campus experience. In the winters though- the campus experience changes drastically. There are very few outdoor activities, and students are much less social due to the frigid weather. The campus goes into a hibernation of sorts.

Guys & Girls: The girls are typical blonde sorority girls and you wonder how the guys got into college.

Majors: Little to no corporate and career networking.

Greek Life: I am a part of a fraternity here on campus. The only draw back is the fact that the Dean of Students and the general liberal area of Madison doesn't condone Greek life in anyway. They want us gone. Otherwise, once you're a part of Greek life at UW it's an amazing experience.

Campus Strictness: From what I have noticed, it's truly a system where there is a good amount of leniency given so when there is a situation that requires police intervention, they will respond with moderately strict legal action.

Nightlife: I don't drink or party, so I don't really know. All of the "big" events are pretty unsafe though.

Greek Life: Greek life here, especially if you're a girl, is really really hard to get into, mainly due to the lack of sororities. If you are related to a faculty member don't even consider it. You'll get released right away. It is also harder to get into if you don't look like a carbon copy of any of the other women in that particular group. If you are an in state student you are also at a heavy disadvantage, because many sororities are known for taking women just based on location and if you know them already.

Off-Campus Housing: I did not live in off campus housing and I do not plan to. What I've heard though is that you have to sign a lease in September(!!!) of the previous year in order to get any type of desirable housing - not okay.

2 College Freshman

Weather: It's extremely COLD here, and when it snows or rains it is very hard to get to class if you do not live close to the academic buildings. Because I lived in Lakeshore I had to rely on the bus all the time, which would often make me late if I did not get to the bus stop almost an HOUR before my class started.

Athletics: Once again the athletics scene revolves around alcohol on gameday. Other than that, the facilities are great and everyone who wants to can participate in a sport, whether it's intramural, club or varsity.

Students put a lot of time and energy into their undergraduate education. Luckily for those at UW, many feel it has been a positive experience. The college atmosphere, expansive campus, and intense academics are only some of the reasons students enjoy UW so much. Students feel they are able to form relationships with other students, as well as their professors. Furthermore, UW leaves them prepared for their future.

An individual’s undergraduate experience is one of the most exciting times in their lives. It is often the first time they are away from parents and making serious decisions about their future. Therefore, it is essential to pick the best university to spend these busy years at. UW offers amazing academics, an inviting atmosphere, and energetic student body. Its location geographically makes it comfortable as well as gorgeous. The facilities are very accommodating, as is the transportation system. Though like any school, there are things that can be improved upon or changed. Parking remains a prevalent issue, for instance. Fortunately, though, issues such as diversity and improvements to the quality of the dorm food are being addressed. Students generally leave the school feeling satisfied and prepared for what’s to come. Wherever you decide to spend your undergraduate years, definitely consider the University of Wisconsin as a practical, exciting, and fulfilling option.
