Most students feel very safe on the Stout campus and in the Menomonie community. The UW-Stout Police Department and Menomonie Police are very visible. So visible, in fact, that you can't go from one end of town to the other without seeing a police officer. The campus is lit especially well, and many students feel comfortable walking home alone at night, even if it's not advised. Most problems on campus involve vandalism, drinking, or stolen bikes.
In recent years, residence hall security has improved. There are now video cameras at the main entrance to every building, and University Housing has done a better job patrolling the hallways after dark for suspicious behavior. Although most students feel safe, many believe that the campus should take more precautionary measures. The campus does not offer an escort service, nor does the campus have blue-light emergency telephones.
