Technology at Stout reigns supreme! The laptop program is great, with students being issued a computer when they arrive on campus. Most students are issued PCs; however, most design majors are issued Macs. The laptop is top-of-the-line, and all of the expensive software is included. Technical support is available at two "ASK 5000" help desks on campus. If something happens and the ASK 5000 can't fix it within two hours, you are issued a loaner laptop. Finally, another perk is that you get a new computer every two years. There is also wireless Internet access all over campus, so you can submit that assignment online right before class. Most classrooms are "SMART classrooms," meaning that they are audio/visual equipped. In addition, students can check out computer projectors, digital video cameras, and more from the library.
There are always drawbacks when it comes to technology, though. Students have had issues with their laptops, and sometimes it takes ASK 5000 nearly three months to fix the problem. Computer labs on campus are diminishing due to the laptop program; however, there are still plenty of computers available in the library and in specialty labs on campus. In addition, sometimes computers can be a distraction in class. Imagine sitting in the back of the class and looking toward the front only to see that half of the class is texting, checking their email and Facebook, or surfing the net!
