With a feeling similar to a state school, Western has tons of school spirit that predominantly centers around sports. Varsity athletes are well respected, and sports hold a lot of importance to the students. Although attendance can occasionally be low at certain points of the year, student attendance is high at opening, Homecoming, and final games. The most popular sport to watch is undoubtedly football, but followings are gradually growing for volleyball, hockey, and baseball, as the teams demonstrate more success over the seasons.
Western recently renovated its athletic centre, and it's incredible. The facility has an Olympic-sized pool, lots of equipment, and copious cardio machines. Although it gets busy, the athletic centre's large size often has a high turnover rate in terms of equipment. Intramural sports are also a large aspect of student life. No matter the sport, team representatives must line up at 7:30 a.m. on registration day to get a competing spot. If you don't have a team, you can advertise yourself as a floater on the school Web site, to be sure that someone will contact you to be on their team.
