5 College Junior

Guys & Girls: The people at UVA are definitely very good looking in general.

5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: UVA students are very attractive. It can get pretty distracting on most days.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Most students dress pretty well and there is a significant amount of preppy dressers. But you will see a lot of people in leggings and sweatshirts too! Most people like going out but there's plenty of people who don't and aren't judged for it, and it seems to me like there's a healthy mix of hook-ups and relationships.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Most people here are very friendly and accepting. You do see very judgmental people now and then.

3 Recent Alumnus

Guys & Girls: There's a group for everyone here, which is why it's awesome. It's hard to characterize the students as a whole, even though we have a reputation for being very preppy.

UVA students have a very refined look. Most really care about appearances, so you will certainly see a lot of dressing up for class, as well as a lot of students running around campus and working out at the gym. Some find this to be a cute and distinctive feature of UVA, while others find it obnoxious and superficial. Most students agree that the girls are way hotter than the guys. Personality-wise, however, there is some definite snobbiness that’s found more within the female population, which detracts from better looks. The guys are mainly fratty—many complete with shaggy hair, LaCoste polos, and beer guts. There are many stereotypes at UVA, but there is truly every type of person here. Although people sometimes feel overwhelmed by the "fratmosphere," it is key to remember that only a third of the campus is actually Greek.

It is sometimes remarkable how many similar-looking people one can find at UVA, but there is a fuller mix of people, passions, and styles that surface looks may betray. In general, people are very friendly and outgoing, with a wonderful laid-back sense of humor. The more you become involved in different activities and organizations, the more you’ll become exposed to different sorts of people—not just the ones who define UVA’s style from afar. There is definitely a great mixture of brains and beauty at UVA, and if you look hard enough, you will find both.

Birth Control Available?
The pill, the patch, the ring, the shot-basically everything is offered. Call (434) 924-2773 a few weeks in advance to schedule an appointment. Sometimes, they get really backed up, so the earlier you call the better. It is also helpful and less intimidating to talk with a PHE (Peer Health Educator) about these sorts of things, in addition to a gynecologist. The Peer Health Educator is usually an upperclassman who is fully trained and has all sorts of important information about both men's and women's health.

Social Scene
The UVA social scene is difficult to define. Certainly, Greek life makes up a lot of it, though definitely not as much as it used to. But while the school holds tight to many of its traditions-Greek life included-UVA is expanding to include a variety of different social scenes as more and more different people join the community. Students are generally outgoing, friendly, and interested in what they do; the social scene is a huge part of student life.
Hookups or Relationships?
UVA can be odd and sometimes frustrating in terms of relationships, dating, and hookups. Often, you'll find two types of people: those who randomly hook up at frat parties and bars, and those who are in extremely serious relationships that will probably culminate in marriage after graduation. There is very little casual dating that comes in between. The preference for hookups versus relationships tends to show the most through age and year, with a lot of people resigning themselves to hookup culture for their first couple of years.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Typically, classes, student organizations, sports teams, mutual friends, and gatherings are all great ways to meet new people. Day parties, held on Friday and Saturday afternoons during the spring semester, are also a great way to meet new people.
Dress Code
UVA's social dress code is quite distinct and easily followed, if you have the desire to strut your stuff. Guys - Polo shirt or button down, khakis, madras pants jeans, or Nantucket Reds, Rainbow flip-flops or Sperry topsiders, UVA baseball hat covered in frat sludge, and wayfarer/Ray Ban frat glasses. Girls - Pretty dresses, designer jeans with a srat t-shirt and a Northface (Mountain Hardware will suffice), or cute Nike gym shorts and oversized t-shirt, Rainbow flip flops or Jack Rogers, blown out hair, designer Aviators or wayfarers.
