5 College Freshman

Facilities: a lot of libraries to go to, great study spaces, a lot of places to hang out

5 College Freshman

Facilities: campus life is great, social scene is bumpin, everything is great

4 College Freshman

Facilities: There are student activities fairs that promote the different clubs and activities occurring on grounds. I joined a few and find that it has given me a network of supportive friends to turn to as well as an outlet for discovering what college is all about, making connections while learning.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: University of Virginia is a wonderful school with professors and staff members that genuinely care about your academic progression and success. My professors recognize me, even in large lecture classes. I have friends in every class, yet all of us are driven and focused on the material presented. UVA has endless programs become a part of. If the one you want is unavailable, make your own! The dorms are either new and beautiful or old and historic, two of my favorite things! It has a small school feel in a big school setting.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: Great gyms and fields. Not sure about art department. Plenty of places to play whatever your sport is.

Students agree that the athletic facilities (especially the Aquatic and Fitness Center) are superb. There always seems to be some sort of renovation going on. The school is currently working on construction of several new facilities, and they’re renovating many older ones. However, despite the excellent gyms and new athletic- and fitness-oriented projects, UVA sometimes neglects other parts of the campus. Some students complain about the condition of labs and classrooms within the various colleges, and the administration has taken these complaints to heart by funding a huge South Lawn project, which is currently under construction. The project will provide hundreds of new classrooms and state-of-the-art space for students and faculty.

UVA makes sure to take care of every sort of athletic need; it is unfortunate that it does not do the same for its arts. While there is certainly a theater (two, in fact, when counting the black box), a photo lab, and a studio, the University still lacks a real arts center, though there is a new one in the works. UVA has one of the largest endowments of any public university, and the administration has taken strides over the past few years to put this money to work efficiently throughout the university. For the most part, computer labs and classrooms are very nice and well-equipped, and the constant construction around campus shows signs of progress.

Urban Legends
There are plenty of UVA myths floating around. One is that Dr. Seuss used to live in this great big house up on the hill, looking down towards Newcomb Hall. Apparently, after being rejected from UVA, he wrote a little book called How the Grinch Stole Christmas. In this book, he depicted himself as the grouchy, resentful old Grinch staring down at all the "Whos in Whoville." Another myth-a bit more racy-is that any first-year girl who walks across the big white Z letters painted all around grounds (which signify the "Z" secret society) will get pregnant. Still another that is re-ignited every year as the entering class settles in is that, in the first weekend students are in town, Dave Matthews supposedly plays an all- day concert in the amphitheater. Don't be a poor sap and wait all-day long by yourself in the amphitheater! I can pretty much guarantee he won't show.
Favorite Things To Do
UVA students have been known to work out, lie on the lawn, grab a meal with friends, walk to a bar off campus, and see a movie in Newcomb all in a span of one day! Work out in the AFC (Aquatic Fitness Center) or any other gym (Memorial Gym, North Grounds, Slaughter Gym); take a dip in the hot tub or rest up in the sauna on the ground floor of the AFC; check out a play in Culbreth Theater or see a relatively recent movie playing in the basement of Newcomb Hall; have coffee in the library at Greenberry’s, or a smoothie with friends in the PAV; play Frisbee on the lawn; check out a concert from one of UVA's a cappella groups; attend a film screening and lecture, visit the UVA Art Museum.
