5 College Freshman

Majors: i have no concern that i will find a good job graduating from here

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Living on the corner is a must

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: Do it early in case you run into any trouble, other than that, it's all good!

5 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Things are pretty lenient around here

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Crazy amount of drinking. Other college students tend to come visit and end up puking or passed out because they can't handle it. Drug use is limited or very secretive.

Computers: Wireless could definitely be better. Buy your computer through Cav Computers, definitely.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: There's a lot of activism about ending sexual violence in multiple groups around grounds.

2 College Freshman

Nightlife: There's always a grungy frat house you can go to if you want to get soaked with beer.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Basketball and football are both huge, and people love intramurals too. Fun atmosphere.

5 College Freshman

Academics: You'll be working your ass off, but you should be learning, too.

Diversity: Grounds is very wealthy, straight, and white. Socially many people may be liberal, but there is a huge core of Young Republicans who will loudly disavow Obamacare without making any solid points. For what it's worth, the University makes a huge effort to increase diversity or at least awareness of diversity, but it is hard to pick up on this on a daily basis.

Scholarships: Out of state tuition is ridiculous, but I did get some aid. This is slowing down though, less aid is being given out. Definitely annoying to hear about in-staters talking about how much it costs when they're paying half.

Campus Housing: Old Dorms are good for proximity, but don't go into New Dorms unless you want to become very, very jealous. That wouldn't be a huge deal, but the dichotomy is frustrating.

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life dominates. Obviously you can get by without being in a frat or a sorority but: there are girls who think that "all guys with a social life rush" so... boys might want to consider that. For girls there's less obvious pressure, but when Bigs start showing up in your dorm showering all their littles with gifts, the Greek presence definitely dominates.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: "Don't drink in dorms" is the law of the land. Otherwise, drinking and fake IDs are completely accepted. And, if you keep your door shut and are subtle, the RAs can't come in and just bust you -- and they'll tell you that. Drug use is cracked down on (cops are called at the first scent of weed) but it happens anyway.

Off-Campus Dining: The Corner is great but doesn't have a ton of variety; there's variety to be found downtown if you're willing to bus.

College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I haven't applied to live off grounds so I can't speak to this.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Downtown Charlottesville is very different than UVa grounds - much more liberal feeling and you stop seeing nothing but sundresses once you're a few miles away from grounds.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Guys and girls on grounds are extremely fit and good looking. But every girl is wearing a Barbour coat and Frye boots, and the boys rotate among their Patagonia, Vineyard Vines, and Ralph Lauren 1/4 zips. Everyone kind of blurs together.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: Campus buses are nothing special, but they'll get you where you need to go. Very crowded at certain times since everyone lives off grounds.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: needs to be better funded and have more scholarships for students

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
