Facilities: Great locations and almost all 24 hours with all different types of study environments

Computers: Mac or PC? Mac and PC friendly, although the increasing trend is majority Macs. PCs are mandatory for Engineering School kids but for the College and other schools, mostly all Mac.

Campus Housing: I Love the Old Dorms but Jealous of the New Dorms – I personally love the old dorms! It is so close to classes and they may be old but I love the structure and everything about it. I will admit I am jealous of the fact that new new dorms have AC and elevators but am not jealous that there rooms feel like hotels, and hotels aren't always homey.

Local Atmosphere: The locals on the corner never bother us and are friendly whenever I have been on the corner. The night scene becomes more uncomfortable to walk around alone as a female but I have never been bothered. There are plenty of activities through the school that extra activities aren't necessary but are available and pretty accessible.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: Grounds are gorgeous, the academics are great and competitive, the extracurricular activities are abundant, school spirit is amazing, and the people are awesome. I love my school so much that even when I am stressed about midterms, I can't stop myself from thinking about how much I love UVA.

Drug Safety: Drugs and Alcohol Are Prevalent – Drugs and alcohol are visible on grounds, but mostly on the weekends. I notice alcohol more than I do drugs. I only hear about the drugs that are used by others, I have never seen the physical use of drugs.

Campus Strictness: Honor Code Is Very Strict – We value the Honor Code and offenders are punished by expulsion. It seems drastic but I appreciate it because I believe in the Honor Code and it fits my personal Honor Code I have followed forever.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Interesting to Say the Least – I don't have many favorite experiences, but as a whole, UVa has made me learn about myself as a person. I have gone through many hardships, thus making me realize how to stay strong and keep on keepin' on. This school is unique in the sense that I will never truly understand many people and traditions they have. I would not chose it again because it is not the school for me, but I don't regret coming here.

Diversity: Hide and Go Seek – You really have to go look to find diversity. The overall atmosphere is very white and meets the stereotypical greek preppy standard. however, if you look deep enough you can find your niche. It may take time though. There are many common religions/political beliefs/sexual orientation, once again there are diverse ones as well, you simply have to look around!

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: It really depends whether you live in Old Dorms of New Dorms. They both have their pros and cons.

Old Dorms (pros):
- close to grounds
- hall style allows you to meet many people
- bus stop right in front

Old Dorms (cons):
- small
- share bathrooms with about 30 girls

New Dorms (pros)
- sweet style
- living common area
- more space
- less sharing bathroom

New Dorms (cons)
- further from grounds
- takes longer to get around
- potentially meet less people since there are less people in your building

Greek Life: Greek life at the University is definitely still strong, but with a participation at only around 30% it is nowhere near the level it was in the mid 80s to early 90s. I have most definitely had a great experience at every place I have been to, mostly because I happen to know at least one brother in every fraternity I visit. The brothers in the fraternities are very friendly if you make an effort to be polite. Most of the sorority girls are also very friendly and fun to hang out with. If you don't want to be part of the fraternity scene, that's fine, just good luck getting in if you're a GDI.

Facilities: The facilities here are excellent and are all beautiful examples of Jeffersonian-era architecture. The libraries are expansive and have plenty of room to study and work.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: "Inside Scoop" – The class options are incredible- i find myself wanting to take everything. the scenery is also spectacular and the lingo is also very unique

4 College Freshman

Weather: Four Seasons – it has the nice variety of Virginia weather with fall, winter, spring, and summer changes

4 College Freshman

Transportation: there are buses, taxis, safe rides, trains, airport.

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: It's Real – All those typical frat parties you see in movies actually do exist. and they are certainly at UVA. however, there are also bars like coups for people over 21 or those able to get in. So theres definitely a variety because theres also tons of apartment parties and a lot of clubs throw parties as well in case you get tired of the frat scene

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Homogenous Vs Diverse – its a bit overwhelming to see so many people who dress and act the same. it doesn't mean they're not nice or even that they're not being genuine but it gets somewhat redundant. some of the guys are the exact copies of frat guys you expect to see and there are the more nerdy ones. but there are also the people who aren't either extreme.

Off-Campus Dining: The Corner – The corner is very accessible, not too expensive, and has a lot of late night options like little johns or the dumpling store. theres a huge variety from pizza or subs to mexican. But even near hereford and gooch/dillard there is thai 99 which is delicious and i prefer it more than lemongrass (which is on the corner)

2 College Junior

Greek Life: There are different variations of greek like at UVA. For instance, the IFC is very different from the National Panhellenic Council. With IFC fraternities and sororities, they do dominate the social spectrum for those that it is relevant too. However, with the National Panhellenic Council, they don't dominate really dominate the social spectrum. Sororities and fraternities in the NPHC don't have parties every single weekend. Whereas fraternities in the IFC typically do. It's easier for frats in the IFC to throw parties because they all have houses. It's definitely a status thing with those organizations. The NPHC has it's own level of status, but not being involved in one of those organizations doesn't necessarily determine your social status at UVA.

Weather: Iffy at Times – The weather here is occasionally terrible. Not to scare anyone away, but from time to time there's a day where it just rains ALL DAY. Plus, it gets cold pretty quickly and when it's hot, it's very hot. But for the most part, the weather is amazing. Chamber of Commerce-type days most of the time.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Gorgeous Grounds – We have an amazingly beautiful campus. Lots of red brick, which I suppose may not be your cup of tea, but it's basically what you think about when you think of what a college campus looks like. The workout facilities are top-notch, particularly the AFC. Newcomb Hall, which is the student union equivalent, is being renovated now, and the parts that are finished look great!

5 College Freshman

Academics: Academics are awesome, and you have every single resource you can imagine. USE THEM and study hard.

Facilities: The water bottle filling stations are pretty spiffy – Save the planet <3

5 College Freshman

Health & Safety: After the buses stop running around 12:30, you can get free rides from Safe Ride if you're stranded somewhere and don't want to walk home in the dark.

5 College Freshman

Transportation: UTS, the school bus system will take you everywhere on campus. Charlottesville buses also stop around campus, and students get free rides around Charlottesville if you show the driver your Student ID. But beware of drunk hobos on the city buses - they're mostly nice but slightly smelly and unpredictable.

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
