Majors: Easy to get into, but I always new what I wanted to do and I had good marks in high school.

Campus Strictness: Nothing overly strict in my opinion

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Has some great areas with solid restaurants and decent shopping, but also some rough parts nearby.

Facilities: Great gyms and fields. Not sure about art department. Plenty of places to play whatever your sport is.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Hard to say because my household income is above the threshold for the most part. They should be more willing to help out-of-state students b/c it is so expensive.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Not a ton of options, but enough for the size of the school. Lots of fun

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Some of the best labs and profs are in the engineering school. Lots of cool research opportunities as well.

Transportation: School bus lines run pretty frequently and are free. City busses aren't great but students ride for free. Taxi availability is good except on weekends.

Off-Campus Housing: Must sign for lease WAY early (November-early January) for the following year which is a pain. Parking is kind of a nightmare. Expensive across the board.

Overall Experience: Depends on your major, but UVA is an okay place to be.

Parking: Parking off-grounds is usually difficult.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Old Dorms are social, New Dorms are nice, New New Dorms are even nicer.

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Everyone has a Mac. CavComputers is helpful.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: The school says only 1/3 of students are Greek, but it seems like that's very low. Lots of people walk around sporting sorority shirts.

3 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Frats for first years, the Corner for everyone else.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Lemongrass, Christian's Pizza, Takeout, etc. are some favorites.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Personally, I avoid the dining halls. Food isn't great. I only go to take the fruit.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: When people want to go out, they either go to frats or to the Corner.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: The media studies program is a one of the most recent additions to the departments at UVA. As such, it is still growing. I'm finding it to be a worthwhile program.

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
