4 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life is very influential despite only 30% participation rate. Most large social events revolve around Greek life.

2 College Freshman

Drug Safety: The drug scene is not that noticeable. There are many other options if you don't want to and there is not pressure to if you don't want to. The most prevalent is alcohol though.

Athletics: The athletic scene isn't overpowering, but many take time to exercise and participate in various sports.

Nightlife: I don't take part in partying too often.

Off-Campus Dining: So many restaurants! Tons of delicious ethnic options and good quality restaurants. Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter help with grocery shopping.

Computers: Plenty of printers and labs available, but it gets busy near exam time. Personal computers are pretty much necessary.

Campus Housing: A little pricey, but worth it in my opinion. First year old dorms are not as nice as new dorms, but have a better location. Gooch/Dillard is far away from central grounds. Brown is convenient, and the IRC has a lively community.

Weather: First few weeks of fall semester are extremely warm. Make sure to have rain boots, they'll come in handy! Spring is nice :)

Health & Safety: Some instances of sexual violence. Campus police force is very friendly and helpful.

Diversity: Many ethnic groups band together and stray little from their respective groups. As an Indian who is not part of the Indian Association (which is insular), I feel somewhat ostracized from that community, and I must find my place elsewhere. My friends are from a wide variety of organizations. I generally feel accepted, but there are acceptance issues throughout the community. I've heard rumors of certain frats/sororities trying to look at potential members' incomes throughout the bidding process.

Off-Campus Housing: I'm not living off-campus, but prices are reasonable to high in the Charlottesville area. Leases must be signed at the start of a school year in order to gain housing for next year, as desirable places are taken quickly.

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
