The crème de la crème of facilities is still reserved for athletes. Most students have a mild abhorrence for athletes due to pampering by the University, and feel like athletes are provided with their own large campus "country club." The University does spend a few of the leftover dollars on facilities for students, and most of the students that use them are satisfied with their accessibility and quality.

Most of the academic buildings are rather old, but many have been renovated and brought up to some pretense of modernity. A university of this size suffers a lot of wear and tear. Anything new does not stay new for long, and no matter how hard they try to maintain facilities, some get worn and dirty quickly. While we still do not enjoy marble floors and Italian leather chairs in campus facilities, there have been many improvements over the last several years. UT is eternally a "work in progress," but it is certain athletics will remain top priority.

  • Colors: UT's school colors, orange and white, were chosen by Charles Moore, president of the athletic association in 1889. According to Moore, he chose the colors after the orange and white daisies he saw growing on the Hill; it is possible that Moore was color blind, however, since no daisies of such colors are known to exist.
  • Mascots: The Volunteers get their name from one of Tennessee's most popular nicknames, "the Volunteer State." The nickname derives from the overwhelming number of Tennessee citizens volunteering for military service in past wars. Smokey, a bluetick coonhound, was instated as the official live UT mascot in 1953. The school chose a hound because the breed is native to Tennessee, and according to the UT Web site, the dog's "small stature and loud baying represent a unique combination."
Favorite Things To Do
Grab some food, go out for a coffee or beer depending on your preference and age, take an opportunity to work out, or take in a dollar movie at the UC. Basically, the options are there, it’s just a matter of going out and doing it. Play intramural flag football, soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee, and basketball; swim laps at the Student Aquatic Center pool; and work out at the "Bubble."
