In case you haven’t noticed from the student opinions, football is pretty much the focus of the sports calendar for USC. Students really make a big deal out of tailgating and attending the games, even if they just do it for the social aspect rather than for love of the game. While the team may not win every game, they provide the excitement that comes with national-caliber football. The football team has made it to bowl games, the baseball team is getting better (and just moved in to the brand new Carolina Stadium), and the basketball team’s future looks even more promising year after year.

On the other hand, intramurals are still a fun way for students to get together and have fun, even though they may not attract 85,000 fans per game. Anyone can join an intramural team, with a myriad of sports from which to choose (there are more intramural sports teams than there are varsity sports teams). Many students create intramural teams through a club or organization, but any individual can sign up to be on a team. Students can choose from sports such as basketball, crew, rugby, soccer, tennis, flag football, and many more. Whether it’s high personal participation or great school spirit you’re looking for, USC athletics have the best of both worlds.

Most Popular Sports
Football is, by far, the most popular sport. Not necessarily because the team is incredibly great, but because USC has got some diehard football fans. Baseball and basketball also draw pretty big crowds, both with great facilities and good teams.
Most Overlooked Teams
The women's equestrian team has achieved national championship status in recent years, and the men's and women's track and field team consistently send team members to nationals.
School Spirit
Students at USC are teeming with school spirit, especially during football season. USC T-shirts, shorts, bumper stickers, and caps are seen all around the city of Columbia, as both students and alumni display their pride at being a member of the USC community. There are many reasons that students love USC, but sports are the main reason that they display such pride. You will never see students come together the way they do before a big football game here at USC.
Getting Tickets
USC has recently switched to a convenient online ticket return system. Students go online and register for a ticket and, numbers permitting, will be notified upon receiving one. They then can print their ticket directly offline and use it to enter the game. Of course, tickets for all sporting events are free for students.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Finlay Park, the Horseshoe
Did You Know?
  • Sir Big Spur, USC's first mascot and an actual live gamecock, attends every home football game.
  • There were 11 USC athletes in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
