Facts & Statistics

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Although you are allowed to have a car freshman year, you don't really need one for the essentials, like food, pharmacy, entertainment, etc.
  • Avoid crowds at the bookstore, and don't wait until the last minute to buy your books.
  • Buy a reserved garage space.
  • Despite being warm for most of the year, temperatures can drop to around freezing for a few months, so bring warm clothes and shoes other than sandals.
  • Don't blend in! At such a big campus, you can get lost in the crowd. Make sure your professors, advisors, and RAs know who you are.
  • Don't wait until the last minute to buy your books.
  • Get involved in some organization because it's a great way to make friends.
  • It's normal for freshmen to be undecided about their majors, so don't stress about it.
  • Use the UCHOOSE online system to find a roommate.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Call the Visitor Center at (800) 922-9755 Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (May-August)
Campus Tours
Campus tours are provided by those involved with the volunteer organization known as the University Ambassadors. Comprised of about 70 students ranging from freshmen to seniors, these knowledgeable students lead prospective students and parents on tours that last about 90 minutes (so wear clothes conducive to comfortable walking). During the school year, tours are given and depart at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and are given on select weekends. During the summer months, tours depart at 10 a.m. Reservations and questions can be made via phone at (800) 922-9755. Additional information can be found at visitorcenter.sc.edu.
