5 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: South Carolina is definitely strict when they need to be and they do their best to keep students safe, but they also want kids to have fun. They allow kids to get away with a few things as long as it doesn't have the potential to cause any serious damage.

Facilities: The library is one of the nicest in the country, the Horseshoe provides a large outdoor area where students go to do homework or play frisbee. The student center is in the middle of campus and is combined with dining, classrooms, and other resources. Greene Street is always bustling with activity, whether its free giveaways or the farmer's market.

Nightlife: Five Points has every kind of bar you could think of, and its within walking distance from certain parts of campus. The campus also provides a shuttle on the weekends that runs until three a.m.

Guys & Girls: There are an infinite number of hot guys, most of whom are in a frat or on a sports team. A lot of people dress somewhat preppy, but not overboard. Everyone, both guys and girls, love going out to party and hang out.

Diversity: Most people accept everyone. I haven't heard about any extreme forms of bullying for people in minorities. There are a ton of international students, and people that come from different races and religions. It makes campus so much more interesting.

Off-Campus Housing: There are many options for off-campus housing, and almost every student lives off campus after their freshman years. Shuttles fun from all the apartment complexes to campus making it convenient. Most apartments are affordable, but obviously the nicer you go, the more expensive it is. I've never heard anybody complain about living in apartments.

Athletics: Everyone looks forward to Gameday. Spirits are high, fans are crazy, and the athletic teams, especially football, never disappoint. Sports are top priority here, and we have some amazing facilities.

Drug Safety: I'm not aware of the drug scene on or off campus, however many students do take part in the social scene of the bars. Even the few bars that allow students underage in, they don't serve towards minors. If you're underage and looking to drink the best bet would be house parties and those of the sort, the bars are highly strict on who they serve.

Athletics: South Carolina is known for the football and baseball team but lately the basketball team has been making a name for it's own. Fall season, everyone, including faculty, are in high spirits about the weekend events of football games. It is simply the highlight of the fall semester and the gathering event of every weekend. When football dies down, basketball season takes place, not as exciting as football, but it definitely keeps fans active in the off season. However when baseball season starts up it definitely brings a new joy for the spring. It's hard to go to this school if you don't enjoy sporting events since the two semester have such prominent teams in the division.

Computers: The campus network and wireless availability is probably one of the worst I've come encounter with. It's very spotty and in class I've had trouble logging into websites needed for classes. This is most likely the worst thing about the campus. They should definitely look into fixing this issue as soon as possible considering most classes and note taking for class by students is more technology focused these days than past.

Scholarships: The aid is understandable, however as an out-of-state student, the aid I received has been little to none. Financial aid is based on my father's income, although loans are taken our solely in my name and I am the sole person responsible to repay them. I have recently filed to petition against the financial aid department for independence to receive more financial aid and am awaiting their verdict. Hopefully, they see my case fit and I receive the aid needed, however how aid is based, I believe is poor.

Off-Campus Housing: The choices could definitely be better for off-campus housing. Some housing is extremely far from campus, forcing students to either take the available shuttle from complex or drive. The prices aren't bad, however they trap you into fees that are a bit outrageous after the fact.

Guys & Girls: The guys on campus can generally be found sporting khaki pants, colored pants, a button up or fraternity/sorority function/philanthropy shirt, and boat shoes. I always tell people the guys on campus seem to have jumped out of a Ralph Lauren catalog, they are simply the epitome of "guy pretty". There are a few who do dress differently than this, but most can be found dress business casual or depending on their major business formal.

As for the females, if they are in a sorority in the fall they can be found in yoga leggings/pants or leggings, an oversized shirt and either boots or nike shoes. In the spring they generally are in an oversized shirt with nike shorts and either rainbows or sneakers. Occasionally when they dress up on campus will be wearing similar preppy like clothing as the guys do. Adorning the spring brights and button down tops.

Parking: There are more students than parking spots. The garages fill up entirely too quickly as does off-campus parking with the meters. It's more worth it to take the shuttle from your apartment if one is available than to drive to class.

Campus Housing: I transferred to the university so I never lived on campus, but haven't heard anything too bad. Some dorms are better than others like on other college campuses.

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: The local atmosphere is great, however the locals seem to be a huge problem with the students. There have been plenty of robberies, muggings, shootings and violent attack on students from those who live locally on the outskirts. The police force is usually more worried about underage drinking than actual crime, which is an enormous problem for all, students and faculty.

Weather: The local weather is amazing. The few times it has rained or been cold is very bearable since there are so many days where the weather happens to be simply perfect. There are days when it has been uncomfortably hot around the late spring and early fall semester when it's August. It is hard to want to go to class when it's so beautiful out, but most students suffer through and go to class.

Academics: I love my major and the department works very hard to help all of those in it. The program aligns with similar programs at other universities. Workload isn't too easy nor too hard, depending on how you set your schedule and the amount of hours you decide to take. Even at the minimum amount of hours available to take, it is still a workload that isn't too hard to keep up with. Internships and job opportunities are definitely easier to find in my major than others, but competition against others applying is the hard part.

3 College Senior

Academics: Professors are great, however most students, including myself would prefer if in the more difficult subject areas there were more professors who spoke English or were more fluent. Registration process has had it's complaints, but varies. I've had easy registration processes and then some more difficult. 90-98% of students can be found studying in the main library on campus and business students can be found generally in the business school library since it offers a more quiet, focused atmosphere.

3 College Senior

Transportation: Transportation could be better for those without.

4 College Senior

Nightlife: Nightlife is great, more options for would be better

4 College Senior

Diversity: Most everyone is welcomed on campus.

4 College Freshman

Campus Dining: There are plenty of options to eat on campus and they're all pretty good. Most people get sick of the dining hall (Russell House) pretty quickly though. A few of the places to eat are open late. The only complaint i have is that the meal plan is kind of confusing and the hours of places on campus can be annoying (like some places arent open on weekends).

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: The Greek life is very prominent on campus. They tend to be pretty snobby but wont admit it. If you're a guy and not in a fraternity, its very hard to get into the parties and even tailgates. If you're a girl thats not in a sorority you still can do whatever you want, but feel slightly judged for not being part of a "sisterhood". The Greek Village has beautiful houses but not all the Greeks live in the village for many reasons, like getting kicked off campus and being a smaller than others.

Overall Experience: Everyone is very proud to go to USC. We love our sports and our state!

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
