5 College Sophomore

Majors: University of South Carolina has a top twenty journalism program in the nation. I am loving it.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: As Columbia can be a city of crime, the campus and city police are prominent.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: There is so much opportunity at our school. It is the number one honors college, and has the number one international business program.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: I have enjoyed the majority of my classes. All of the classes related to my major have been relevant and incredibly useful.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: I am not interested in dating any further in college.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I am not personally in a sorority, but my closest friends are, and we all get along and go to many of the same events.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I am struggling to find scholarships, being a middle class, caucasian.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: There is so much offered in classes and extracurriculars at the University of South Carolina.

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: I am not a huge fan of the city of Columbia, but the people around make the nightlife scene very enjoyable.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: I have lived in the capstone dorm for 3 semesters. It is incredibly spacious, but the rules are a little over done.

1 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: The food here is absolutely disgusting. Most students get sick of it after a week.

1 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Almost everyone in the Greek scene is a huge douche. They think they are better than anyone. They also see their only purposes in life are to party and watch football. The guys in fraternities also view women as objects instead of real people, and the girls in sororities only confirm this for them. Sad. If you are not a huge douche, run!!!

College Sophomore

Athletics: If you like football, this is the place for you. During the fall, pretty much every day revolves around the game of the week. Pretty much the entire meaning of life for these people. I really wonder what they would do if football didn't exist.

2 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Most of the people here would probably be interesting people if it weren't for the greek scene. 90% of the girls on the campus wear over-sized t-shirts, leggings, uggs, north face backpack. They all talk in the same voice, do the same exact things. It's like when they rush, they brainwash them into robots with no personality. Very sad.

1 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Almost everyone goes out and parties every night so if you actually care about your education like me, you're screwed.

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is a large international student population. If you love getting to know people from other cultures, there are plenty of opportunities. There are a good amount of out-of-state students as well.

5 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: The is a mixture of every type of person at this school. Yes there are the stereotypical 'southern belles' but they have been some of the nicest girls I've met since I've started here. And same for the guys. It all depends on who you associate yourself with, and there is a group out there for everyone.

Academics: All I have to say is number one International Business major in the country. Workload is tough, but they help set you up for internships and job opportunities, plus all the professors are extremely intellectual.

Academics: Business is a huge major at South Carolina, but they offer a wide variety of majors. You will come across many good and bad professors so don't let one deter you from a major. The academic center is always there to help you whether it is editing a paper, or just there to talk about your future.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: I haven't heard of any school that has a smooth financial aid process, and being a big school doesn't make it any easier.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: Personally I believe that this campus is full of diversity in every matter. While not all are accepting of others views, there are enough people that are going to agree with you. I have never been afraid to express my opinion.

5 College Freshman

Weather: Can't really complain about it being warm year round. Love the change in seasons and short winters. Coming from the North this has been a treat.

Campus Housing: Right now the South Carolina campus is under major reconstruction so it was very hard as an incoming freshman to get housing. In the past there has been sufficient housing for all incoming freshman, but as the classes have began growing in size, there has been a decline in available housing. Overall clean-depending on which dorm you are put into.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Off campus housing typically tends to be pretty expensive, some placing reaching near $800 a month. Off campus housing is located close to campus, and offer transportation to and from campus. Most student apartment complexes are patrolled by the USC cops.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The campus itself is fairly safe, and the police try to make a positive presence, but if you stray off campus towards Five Points there is a lot of gang violence. Lately the police have been trying harder at arresting college students for underage drinking rather than focusing on the real problems which are all the drug and gang violence in Columbia. This led to a girl recently getting paralyzed by a stray bullet while leaving Five Points.

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
