Campus Strictness: I have no complaints about the campus strictness. If anything it makes me feel safer knowing I am being protected.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The strictness at Pitt is relatively average in terms of visitation and doing things like protests. You are allowed people to stay 6 nights in your dorm each month which I think is pretty good because that's almost every weekend each month. One protest the school currently has is the non-use of plastic bags in the market-to-go, which is like a 7-11 to get food. The school allowed this protest so I don't think they are too tough on those sorts of things. With that said, Pitt is very strict about drugs and alcohol in the dorms. If caught with any sort of drugs/alcohol, you are immediately taken into custody. I have seen police in the dorms at different points throughout the semester, so they take this very seriously.

Campus Strictness: People aren't very strict about most things, except if your RA or anyone catches you drinking in the dorms.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Security is only slightly more strict than I think it needs to be. Students are required to sign in guests before entering the dorm which can be annoying and inconvenient. Many students drink in the dorms but will not get in trouble if they are smart about it. Students only get written up if they are loud or have an obnoxious amount of people. While you are allowed a certain number of strikes for alcohol, there is a zero tolerance drug policy. Overall, I have felt nothing but safe in Oakland even at night.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Respect your RA, they don't want to write you up. Put all of your booze out of sight if your dorm drinking if they knock and be polite.. You can get caught fairly easy smoking the reefer in the freshman dorms.

How you perceive Pitt's campus strictness is very dependent on what you're caught doing, where you're doing it, and who catches you. In general, campus police and RAs are very strict when it comes to drug and alcohol use. Although RAs are known to be pretty lenient with their floors regarding alcohol, this doesn't mean that you should try and get away with underage drinking in the dorms. Drug use is even more dangerous, and both campus police and University staff are quick to crack down on drug violations. Punishment for getting caught with drugs or alcohol can mean any combination of a fine, a notification sent home to your parents, a required class in substance abuse, and action by the University's Judicial Board. All of these things are completely avoidable if you're mature enough about what you're doing. Most arrests and citations are the result of students being loud and rowdy, or otherwise drawing attention to themselves. Off-campus parties are rarely busted. When they are, those who live in the busted house have a lot of trouble on their hands. In houses around campus, it's probably going to be campus police who break-up the party. There's a good chance that those who don't live at the house will just be told to leave.

City police are the most lenient of all the authorities you'll encounter because they have more important things to worry about than dealing with drunken college kids. They won't often show up to parties unless a formal complaint has been issued. Clearly, the key is to know your limits and not make a spectacle of yourself. Most of the students who find themselves in trouble have done something to ask for it.
