Oklahoma is well-known for having some of the most unpredictable, chaotic weather in the country. The average temperature in the summer is 95°F, though the past few summers have seen 50-day streaks of temperatures above 100°F. During the fall months, the temperature ranges from the 80s to the 60s. In the winter, temperatures are typically in the 40s, rarely go below the 20s, and can even hit as high as the 60s. The spring months are known for their severe weather dangers, such as tornadoes and hail storms, and generally feature temperatures from 50°F to 80°F. Students not used to Oklahoma weather should be aware of several things before arriving in Norman. First, tornadoes will happen every year. The University is well prepared for them and generally has warnings days before tornado conditions arrive. Second, the most common weather-related dangers are hail and heat. Heavy hail damage occurs every two to four years and can total cars, ruin roofs, and injure people. Heat, especially in the summers, is unbearable if one does not dress properly. Third, the wind in Oklahoma is terrible, and it makes cold days much more chilling than one would expect.
