Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Demonstrate leadership roles in a few select extracurricular activities. Show dedication and growth in a few organizations rather than just general membership in a bunch of different clubs.
  • Do self-motivated volunteer projects. Volunteer opportunities that you sought out and accomplished yourself sound better than just completing them for a requirement for a school organization or previously planned group outing.
  • In your essay, write about your plans for your four years at UNCW. They want to accept students that will be important and proactive on UNCW's campus, and that will really take advantage of what UNCW has to offer.
  • Mention specific traits you possess, experiences you've had, talents you have etc., that display something different and diverse. UNCW wants to bring a variety of students to its campus, so be sure to bring something new to the table.
  • Show consistency in your GPA and grades throughout your high school career. The more well-rounded, the better.
  • Take a campus tour, and make the effort to talk to your UNCW admissions counselor. The more effort they see of your interest, the more inclined they are to remember you and want you at UNCW.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • All of the parking rules regulations. Read the online parking handbook prior to bringing a car to campus.
  • Make sure your bike lock is always working. Don't try and make it look like it's locked to put off having to buy a new one. "Bike borrowing" does happen, and no one is immune to it! Also, make sure to register your bike with the UNCW police right when you come to school.
  • Purchase Safe Rides. These are vouchers that get you $5 in a taxi, and you only have to pay $2 for each! Buy them at Sharky's Box Office on campus before going out or traveling by taxi.
  • Put in your preferences for housing right when signups become available for incoming freshmen.
  • UNCW sees every type of weather, so bring the proper gear to campus. Random bouts of rain are common, so rain boots, a big and sturdy umbrella, and a waterproof rain jacket are necessities. And it does get cold in the winter because of the winds from the ocean, so gloves and hats help.
Interviews & Information Sessions
The UNCW Office of Admissions does not conduct interviews when reviewing prospective students. However, there are a variety of visitation programs throughout the year targeted to various student types. These in-depth programs provide you with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic programs and the vibrant campus community. Just Juniors (high school juniors), Seahawk Saturday (high school seniors), Dare to Soar (accepted high school seniors), Transfer to Teal (transfer students), and Transfer Saturday Tours (transfer students) are available throughout each semester. Most of these programs provide student panels, academic panels, information fairs, and residence hall tours. Contact the UNCW Admissions main office at (910) 962-3243 to easily make an appointment with a counselor, find your counselor for your specific hometown, find out more information, etc.
Campus Tours
Tours are only offered when classes are in session—not on holidays. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, tours are offered at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., while on Tuesday and Thursday, they are offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tours are offered at the same times during the summer, except for Friday, which excludes the 2 p.m. afternoon tour. Prospective students touring UNCW should register for a tour via their SeaLevel account, and do so at least three days before the selected tour.
Overnight Visits
The only overnight visits available are for students on scouting trips who are planning on or are going to play varsity sports. No other overnight visits are available for prospective students.
Did You Know?
UNCW receives more than 12,500 applications each year, so make sure you bring something different, interesting, or valuable to the table!
