4 College Freshman

Facilities: The library is a nice place to be just to relax and take a quiet break, especially study or write a paper. There is a total of 9 floors to Jackson Library, and each floor has a different "quiet" level; the higher one goes on a floor, the more quiet it is. The library staff and computers are very useful.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: Our arts building is the best and our school spirit is excellent. We have lots of construction going on right now.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: So much to do, variety of offerings

5 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: Elliott Center has great places to eat and buy from the market. Events are small but nice. Library is close and efficient. I live in one of the "Green" Spaces and it's great!

4 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: Plenty of things to do even with the nearby colleges.

If you notice anything while visiting UNCG, it will be the gorgeous campus. Many of the buildings have either been built or remodeled within the past few years, so everything is really top-notch. The buildings that have not been renovated still retain their original charm and beauty—just take a look at the Foust building. But more important than the pretty exteriors is how useful the insides are to paying students, so it's a good thing UNCG's facilities are definite crowd-pleasers. The Elliott University Center acts as an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the average weekday, providing a place for students to refuel and relax. But it's not all play; the EUC also houses the offices of most campus organizations, and even has two ATMs and a machine that sells stamps so students can take care of their personal business, too.

The rec center, which contains the campus gym and swimming pool, is a favorite among health-conscious students. While the building contains all of the latest workout necessities, it seems that there is never enough to go around. Students often have to sign up for specific times to use the most popular equipment, like the elliptical machines or the treadmills, but it is usually not a big hassle once they figure out how to work it into their schedules each week.

School Slang
  • The Atrium: The building that houses the Caf and the resident students' mailboxes
  • College Ave.: College Avenue, the pedestrian-only street that runs through the middle of campus
  • EUC: Elliott University Center
  • General Eds: The general education classes that all students are required to take to graduate. No one is particularly fond of these.
  • Mary Fouster: Anyone who is a part of the Residential College, which is located in the Mary Foust dorm
  • The Rawk: A big boulder situated between the Atrium and Jackson Library. Student organizations spray paint various messages on it throughout the year, and there is an understood rule that a message has to be left up for 24 hours before someone can paint over it.
  • Reading Day: The day after the last day of each semester, when no exams are scheduled. The point is to allow students to catch up on their studying (or relaxing) before final exams go into full swing.
  • Swipe: To use your declining balance
  • TLC: Teaching and Learning Center where you can check out free movies
Traditions
  • Convocation : All new students are given a daisy and a spartan pin after the Convocation ceremony each year.
  • Detergent in the Fountain: Someone always pours laundry detergent in the campus fountain outside of the Atrium, causing mountains of bubbles.
  • Halloween: Every Halloween, the Mary Fousters turn their entire dorm into a haunted house. Around that same time each year, they also put on a performance of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show." It involves both male and female students parading around in lingerie, fishnets, and makeup, and is known to be pretty entertaining.
Urban Legends
  • Aycock Theatre is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Jane Aycock, who reportedly hanged herself in the rafters of the building. According to student eye-witness accounts, she has a little skeleton bird that flies with her in the rafters. While the Aycock Theatre was being renovated during the 2006-2007 school year, strange things, like tools being mysteriously moved, were reported.
  • There may or may not be ghosts haunting the Mary Foust dorm. That could explain why its residents are all so unique.
