The town of Durham is small, and, unfortunately, so is the selection of restaurants. Most students don’t have the time
or money to go to the better places further off campus, so most of the time, you will see students hanging out at the local bars and sub shops during the day. At night, the pizza shops, particularly the Durham House of Pizza, are overwhelmed with people grabbing $1 slices at 1 a.m. The Portsmouth Brewery and the Muddy River Smokehouse are two local restaurants that aren’t too hard on the wallet and are a part of local tradition.
If you do get an appetite for something more, the shuttle buses run to Dover, Newmarket, and Portsmouth, where you can go to some of the more popular chain restaurants, such as Applebee’s, T.G.I. Friday’s, and Olive Garden. There are plenty of fancy restaurants in Portsmouth that are worth visiting, as well—it’s just a matter of getting a bunch of friends together and spending a night out on the town.
