Campus Strictness: I'm off campus student so other than the parking

3 College Senior

Campus Strictness: I have not lived on campus so my only negative experience is with parking. Parking tickets are oversold, so often there is not a spot when I arrive at school in the morning, even after driving around for hours.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I don't live on campus, and never have so I'm not totally sure

3 College Junior

Campus Strictness: I think that the policies affecting my life as a student has definitely impacted my living. When I lived in the dorms I was definitely annoyed because they weren't strict on the no noise policy. It frustrated me because I was trying to study and had a hard time sleeping in the dorms. I think they should be more strict about no noise policy in the dorm and drug usage and cigarette smoking on campus.

4 College Senior

Campus Strictness: I don't think very many things on this campus are strict at all. I think they should have more rules that are more strictly enforced.

Since UM is a state school, the campus and local police can search suspected minors in possession. Since UM is not a religiously-affiliated school, UM does not have an overwhelming number of rules or limitations. The campus police are the least lenient about illegal parking, though; they seem to take pleasure in giving out $25 tickets, ugly pink slips of paper tucked on the front windows of cars.

Underage students caught drinking in the dorms are required to attend a "Self Over Substance" class, which not so much punishes, but rather educates students on the consequences of abusing drugs and alcohol. Visitation policies in the dorms tend to be lenient; guys and girls stay over all of the time. Students generally feel free to do whatever they want, and missing class, being hungover in class, or sleeping with members of their class are commonplace, not illegal, and barely stigmatized actions. Best of all, the campus police help students in need, walking students across campus, giving them rides if they cannot drive themselves, and finding students' stolen goods. UM students do speculate that outright favoritism does exist, with athletes tending to benefit most from all of the above.
