Facts & Statistics

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • According to University policy a student does not have to have more than two finals per day.
  • An up-to-date video game system will make you plenty of friends in a hurry.
  • Bring a long Ethernet cord so you can use your laptop in bed.
  • Bring plenty of quarters to wash clothes, because, for some reason, there are no change machines in the laundry rooms.
  • Don't buy the posters they sell on campus in the first couple weeks. Prices plummet later in the semester when they're desperate to get rid of inventory.
  • Get the smallest meal plan allowed.
  • If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs, because the freshman dorms are usually pretty loud late into the night.
  • Leave your door open for the first week so people on the floor feel like they can talk to you. Walk around to others' rooms and talk to them.
  • Make friends with people in your orientation group, especially ones of the opposite sex.
  • Never buy school merchandise (clothes and hats) from the bookstore on campus, unless you like long lines and inflated prices.
  • Some local restaurants offer UM student's discounts.
  • Students can get their clothes dry-cleaned in the UC.
  • Students can sell back their books to the UM bookstore all year round.
  • The air conditioners don't always do what you want, so be prepared to make wardrobe or linen adjustments.
  • The second floor of the Student Health Center has a student pharmacy.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Call (305) 284-4323 to confirm the availability of an information session or come to the Office of Undergraduate Admission on any weekday at 12:30 p.m. Admissions officers hold information sessions at 12:30 p.m. every Monday-Friday at the Office of Undergraduate Admission on campus. This office is located in the Bowman Foster Ashe building. Check with the office at the number above to confirm that a session will be held on the day of your visit. Reservations are not required.
Campus Tours
Campus tours leave during the school year every weekday at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. from the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Saturday tours start at 10:30 a.m., and information sessions are available by appointment. Weekday tours during the summer leave at 11 a.m. All tours last approximately one hour and are led by current UM students.
Overnight Visits
While the school does not offer any overnight programs, it would be a great experience to spend a night in the dorms with a current UM student. Check with any friends you may have at UM to see if they'll let you stay for a night, or as a last resort, contact your high school's guidance office about past students who have gone to UM. Be careful when you come though. Every night of the week isn't like Saturday, even in party-happy Miami. Likewise, a Monday night might be more boring than a Thursday.
