3 College Sophomore

Diversity: Once again, there is everything under the sun at UM.

Guys & Girls: You will find everything under the sun, but they do trend towards being quite concerned with looks.

Campus Housing: Rooms in Stanford or Hecht are small. Rooms in Pearson have only 1 phone/internet box per room, so you need to run a cable for either phone or internet to your side if you are not next to it.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: It's the University of Miami. Football and basketball are very important, but this isn't UF or FSU.

Drug Safety: Although people do do drugs, the penalties for using are quite stiff.

Local Atmosphere: Lots of nightlife. Make sure you don't get carried away.

Computers: Use cables provided for you to get internet access. The wifi is not good at all.

4 College Sophomore

Weather: You can go to the beach literally any day of the year. But if you enjoy cold weather and seeing the leaves change color, Miami isn't the place for you.

Local Atmosphere: You can't really complain about Miami. There's always places to go to at South Beach, the Wynwood art district, or nearby at Coconut Grove.

Drug Safety: Drugs aren't too big of a deal on campus. There's usually alcohol at off-campus parties, and some people abuse drugs just like any other school.

Campus Housing: I commute to school, but from what I've heard by my friends who live on campus, it isn't too bad.

Transportation: Good transportation! Just wish the public Metrorail (Miami-Dade County Train System) ran more often on weekends.

Campus Dining: It's okay. I've seen better campus dining at other schools, but it isn't terrible.

Parking: I don't have a car on campus, but when family has come to visit me, parking has been bad. My grandparents are old, and they need to be close to where they are going because walking is hard, but there are no spots near my dorm that they can park in, because a permit is required at almost every parking spot with expensive costs, and visitor parking is nowhere near where we want to be, so we couldn't spend much time on campus, because we had nowhere good to park. It was horrendous.

Facilities: There are some old buildings on campus, but there are also a lot of new buildings, and they are doing a lot of construction to build new buildings or renovate/replace older buildings.

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable "hot" girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you'd expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren't that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you'll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it's your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.
