5 College Freshman

Diversity: Melting Pot – I have never met a more diverse group of people in my life. The U represents over 150 different countries, and maybe it's just my group of friends but I would say everyone here is very accepting to culture, orientation, religion, etc. The minorities are the majority and I wouldn't want it any other way (coming from the majority)

Nightlife: I'm in Miami Bitch! Never a dull night! It's Miami, so whether you want to travel to South Beach for crazy times, take the free campus drunk bus to the Grove (closer to campus), or just go to an off campus house party, it'll be a blast. Even without a fake, I have a ton of fun.

Campus Dining: Late Night Dining! They just started late night dining at the Freshman dining hall this year, and it is meal I attend most. Perfect timing! Many people complain about the dining hall's repetition, but if you get creative, you can makes things taste new & delicious. The other places on campus (Food court, subway, STARBUCKS) aren't open all that late but still good timing. Thank god for Dining dollars!

Academics: Learning So Much – Every class I attend, I feel like I receive so much knowledge in so little time. That being said, I am a Nursing major, but the professors here know what they're talking about. Registration sucks as a freshman, though, because you never get the ideal schedule you want.

Nightlife: South Beach, Miami FL – AMAZING. Best location to have a college. South Beach, Miami!! Expensive but find a group of kids to go with you.

Guys & Girls: Materialist girls & guys but just don't get caught up in that.

Campus Housing: Dorms Are Not the Best but It's the Experience – I lived in the freshman dorms and while they are fairly bad, it is very much a bonding experience. You will make friends on your floor and those who also must suffer through Stanford/Hecht and the dining halls. I also lived in the UV which is very nice but very expensive.

Facilities: Took Away the Best – They are building a new student center which looks like it will be nice, though now is causing some ugly construction. They tore down the Rat to build it, which docks them a lot of points for me.

Academics: Science Tends to Get Pretty Insular – I'm a science major, you tend to see the same kids in your classes, especially if you are in PRISM. It starts to feel a little too much like high school.

Majors: Research Opportunities – Although I am only a first semester freshman, I have already been working for 2 months in a research lab in the psychology department at our school. I was set up an interview with my employer through a program called Miami Commitment which finds jobs and internships on campus that are geared to the student's career interests. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I got a job that not only pays, but also looks good for med-school applications.

Facilities: Diversity and Community – The University of Miami is very unique due to its diversity. Although I have only been here for 3 months, I have met lots of people from all over America and the rest of the world. I am learning so much about different cultures and religions just by being exposed to first hand experiences. Sororities and Fraternities here also set our school apart from others. Unlike other schools, the greek life here is very friendly and approachable. The different frats and sororities intermingle, and it is not as segregated or cliquey as like other schools. They are also very involved with philanthropy here, which is something I value greatly.

Overall Experience: Good Balance of Fun and Learning – Although the University of Miami tends to have a reputation for being a "party school," it has, in recent years, really improved its academics and on-campus student life. This year's incoming freshman class is the smartest class they've ever had, and our national ranking has increased dramatically in recent years. Being a student living on campus, I am aware of all the wonderful things that are going on around campus. There is always something to do, and there are always clubs to join. The school has been putting a lot of effort lately into making the school a more vibrant learning environment, and are promoting school spirit. There are a variety of classes and the courses are interesting and geared towards specific career goals. Professors are almost always available and very approachable and helpful.

Parking: Very Expensive – Parking at UM is now more organized since they are issuing parking permits that are color coded in order to assign students certain colors that point to certain areas where they may park. This is done to reduce traffic congestion created by students that wanted the same parking spaces that were close to classrooms in past years. Of course, the students now holding permits that are farther aways pay a lower price as well.

Off-Campus Dining: dining off campus is actually very convenient because prices are usually cheaper than buying something on campus, but of course there are no student discounts. Since the school is off of US! the variety of places that you can encounter are endless.

5 College Sophomore

Computers: Very Modern – Computers at my school are the most up to date and of a variety of types. The school has both PC's and Macs for students to use, although the main system used for administration is Windows

5 College Sophomore

Diversity: Very Diverse – The UM campus is very diverse. Everyday you can see people from all nationalities, speaking variety of languages.

Off-Campus Housing: Off Housing – Is is terrible, very pricy, and there are really no options other than the fact that you simply must go and rent a place much in the same way you would have to in any other place that has nothing to do with college life.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Living on campus is a great way to meet people and make connections. In reality, living on campus is the ultimate college experience, as being a commuter limits you to only being able to go to classrooms and be exclude from many extracurricular activities going on in campus.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: If You Know the People – It is relatively easy to get drugs if you know the right people. Most everyone knows where to get marijuana and virtually cheap. As far as other drugs are concerned you would not easily find those on any campus related activity, unless you happen to know someone. Alcohol is of course very common, especially on the weekends at night, which start on Thursdays.

Computers: Lots of computer labs all across campus (in the dorms and most buildings), but the ones in the library are almost always being used by other students. With tuition, you are given $100 of printing for the year, and that will easily cover you for everything you need to print for classes, for both semesters

Local Atmosphere: Miami Area – Pretty safe area. The shops are very easy to get to since the school has buses running to Coconut Grove (where the clubs are) Thursday through Sunday night. It also has a bus running to the local grocery store, Whole Foods and the shops at Sunset Place Thursday through Sunday. The Metro makes it easy to get to the Target and shops at Dadeland Station. Miami is a great town with lots to offer, but you should not travel alone off of campus when you are going to most places. The places that the school shuttle goes to are safe though.

Weather: It's usually hot outside. Because it's Miami... If it's not hot then usually it's raining. Even when it's winter it's hot in Florida. During winter though, some native floridians will start wearing coats.
Also. It's always humid. ALWAYS!

Drug Safety: Drinking and Hookahs – Everyone uses Hookahs here. They are allowed to publicly and there is even a little hookah place down the road. Plenty of people drink without getting caught. If you do get caught then I heard they really crack down strictly, but you would have to be waving around the bottle of alcohol in the hallways in front of your RA's room.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Everyone Is Perfect – There are so many beautiful people around here. Pretty much everyone looks good all the time. It's hard being a girl on campus because you feel like you really have to look nice all the time! The guys are pretty nice to look at though.

Greek Life: Love, the Greatest of All Things – Home away from home, and one of the main reasons I didn't transfer after freshman year. The Greek community at Miami is relatively small, but for those who are in it, it makes the campus experience fun and exciting. Mixers, special events, beach days and formals make for a packed calendar.

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable "hot" girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you'd expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren't that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you'll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it's your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.
