3 College Freshman

Greek Life: I've seen all the houses, and due to friend who are involved, they are always doing something, but not necessarily on campus.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: It's definitely cheaper if you purchase online at www.shopmiamihurricanes.com than the bookstore.

Nightlife: Party Scene Is Great – Frat parties - 20 minute walk from freshman dorms, free for girls, only open to brothers or freshman boys first semester freshman year
Coconut Grove (The Grove) - mostly 21+, generally fairly strict with IDs, no cover charge, drinks are fairly reasonably priced, bouncers at Barracuda's will take away fake IDs but they have free beer for girls on Tuesdays
South Beach - taxis are about $40 with tip each way, most have cover charges unless you know a promoter, drinks are expensive, most don't confiscate IDs but won't let you in

Campus Housing: Dorms Are Okay – The freshman dorms have a pretty standard layout, but they definitely have a special place in my heart. They have a great social atmosphere and it is easy to meet people freshman year. Most sophomores either move off campus or live in the Mahoney/Pearson Residential Colleges, and most Juniors and Seniors live off campus or live in the University Village. After freshman year, many social groups are formed so people don't feel the need to live in dorms anymore.

Drug Safety: Drinking and Smoking Is Most Popular – The drug scene is definitely apparent, but it mostly includes smoking and sometimes doing ecstasy at South Beach clubs and house music festivals, especially Ultra Music Festival. The school does punish for drug use, but the punishment for smoking doesn't seem to be too harsh.

Parking: Bad Not Terrible. Police are quick to ticket. Never really had a problem especially if you have classes after 4 p.m.

Academics: Hard but Definitely Manageable – Coming from Monmouth University in New Jersey I was so used to an easy school where everything was basically handed to me on a silver platter. U Miami is definitely a hard school, it did not get to number 38 on US News Best College list by just being located in the city of Miami. I am proud to be a hardworking Cane and am even more proud of the Deans List certificate I earned at the end of each semester. Do not listen to the "suntan U" stereotype. If this school really were that easy we would not have so many great teachers and deans coming to teach at this school. Work hard and you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment. You can have your cake and eat it too at Miami (as evidenced by the AMAZING social life you can have with your peers on Thursday night and weekends!)

Facilities: The Gym Is Incredible. The Patti and Allen Herbert Wellness Center is absolutely incredible and is a landmark in design for student wellness. I love how the school emphasizes the importance for physical health and this Wellness Center epitomizes what all schools should have in order to ensure that each and every student can live a healthy life!

Weather: Basically it can be a sunny day but always carry your umbrella. Rain is always unexpected and will catch you on the day when you are carrying all of your electronic devices. Also, the first two months of school are unbearably hot, but end of October until the end of the school year in late April, early May is gorgeous and perfect!

Health & Safety: Very Safe – UMiami is very safe. Although located in Miami, the police keep the campus safe. Blue lights are everywhere if ever needed and you can always get a safe ride from police if you feel uncomfortable. Safety alerts are sent via email if the campus needs to be aware of anything.

4 College Senior

Drug Safety: There but Not Overwhelming – No matter what school you go to, drugs will be present. However, here they are nowhere near shoved in your face. If you want nothing to do with any, you have no need to be around drugs. Drinking is more visible around campus, but again, you can easily avoid it if you prefer.

Off-Campus Dining: SO Many Options – No matter what type of food you like, you can find it. Go right across the street to Sunset Place for a multitude of restaurants that are all moderately priced!

3 College Senior

Parking: Not Yet Mastered – The campus has been trying to improve parking for a while. It's getting better and more convenient but still a bit messy. Try to arrive early for classes in case you cannot find a spot right away

Campus Dining: Many Options but Nothing Fantastic – The food at UM is not terrible by any means there are two dining halls that are open at decent times. The dining halls have 4-5 different sections which have different types of food. There is a vegetarian only section, grilled food section, stir fry and other options.

Scholarships: A Breeze! The processing took little time and seeing someone regarding financial aid was amazingly easy. It wasn't even crowded and it didn't take long to hand everything in. The staff are very knowledgeable and are good at what they do.

Local Atmosphere: The beach is a decent drive away. In Coral Gables, there's always something to do. It's very metropolitan. The metro rail is always fun to ride and you can take the bus to the beach or downtown to Bayside. University of Miami is also conveniently located by Dadeland Mall and Sunset Mall. Nice restaurants are all around, like Shorty's BBQ. University of Miami also has it's own art museum called The Lowe Art Museum. It is a must!

Academics: Nice Staff and Easy Process – I am going to University of Miami for their Political Science program. The advisors are very friendly and helped me register easily. Any questions I had, I had the flexibility to contact via e-mail, phone or even drop-by. The campus is clean and people are decent. UM has it's medical school, law school, and engineering programs. The quality of education seems great.

Weather: Sunshine State – The weather is really nice here. Sometimes it's hot but the campus has little hut houses in which you can relax in. It's very cool. It's nice and sunny most days. Sometimes it'll rain but the campus has plenty of shelter. The weather makes it looks like a really pretty park. People hang out on the grass, walk their dogs and even study under a shady tree.

Athletics: Lots of Free Sports – All games for every sport are free for students. You usually don't need to apply for tickets to anything. The football games are far away but the school provides buses so it is easier to get there. Sports aren't our life but there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. IM sports are easy, free and fun. They are centrally located on campus so its easy to get involved.

Campus Strictness: Don't Cheat or Drink Illegally – While you can have alcohol on campus (we have a bar at the UC) if you are caught underage drinking or doing drugs you will be quite miserable. You have to go in front of an entire council and end up on probation and having to take classes about drug and alcohol abuse. With drug possession , you may be arrested as well because we have security that is also sanctioned by the city police. But otherwise, the campus is pretty relaxed. Keep your door closed and don't make a scene and you will be fine.

Overall Experience: Fantastic School With a Ton of Opportunities – UM was a great choice. Outdoor pool, lots of field trips, small classes, top notch gym, movie theater, intramurals, close to a lot of bars and clubs. Not just a college town. Beautiful beaches and great shopping. Warm weather year round. Flip flops and shorts are standard dress all year. You won't skate through your classes but they aren't impossible. Frat and sorority life is not necessary here.

Campus Housing: Older Freshman Dorms – They are a lot of fun and a great way to meet people but they are small and some aren't remodeled yet. You can't have a car on campus as a freshman but there are plenty of shuttles to get you where you want to be. And they are right next to the gym and cafeteria so its easy.

Off-Campus Dining: Not South Beach, but Pretty Great – The off-campus sites are good for a dinner date, a night out on the town with friends, bar night with friends or even karaoke night at the bar. There are a wide variety of places to go for a relatively low price. Bars and diners such as Titanic, Buffalo Wild Wings, and plenty of ethnic restaurants such as Los Ranchos and Diego's Restaurant. The best part is that some of the restaurants are within walking distance! As a matter of fact, the reason why I give it a B+ is because restaurants in South Beach are out of this world and I can't give out two A's.

Overall Experience: Spirited, Fun, but Tough – Courses are usually challenging. But campus atmosphere is always spirited and fun. The Rat is a great place to eat and relax in between classes. I would still go to UM if I could do it all over again, despite having initial hesitations about staying in state.

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable "hot" girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you'd expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren't that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you'll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it's your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.
