Majors: The program is very selective. They receive hundreds of applications and portfolios and only have about seventy spots to fill. I was fortunate enough to be chosen to study in the school of architecture. I put together a portfolio with eighteen of my paintings. They were not particularly looking for architectural projects but rather artistic ability.

Majors: I have not started an internship but I plan on starting one this summer at a firm back in my hometown. I have to have completed 5,000 hours of internship in my five years in the architectural program. I am concerned about finding an internship in Miami when I am attending school as well.

Facilities: I absolutely love our campus and the facilities that are included. The campus is beautiful and there are so many places on campus where one can study, eat, relax, etc.

Guys & Girls: The students at University of Miami tend to be very superficial and snobby. The Sororities and Fraternities create an instituionalized hierarchy of wealth and popularity.

Campus Dining: The food is not bad. I actually really liked it for the first few months. After a while, you get kind of tired of it but it can still be enjoyable and definitely edible. I'm a vegetarian and there's usually a good amount of options, but there are some days where I feel limited on what I can get.

Greek Life: Greek life is cool here because it's not an overwhelming force on campus, yet they do have an influence and are seen. The only thing that isn't the best is that sororities don't get houses because there's a law in Coral Gables that puts a limit on the number of women that can live together.

Health & Safety: I feel extremely safe. There are sometimes safety issues, but they're always taken care of quickly and efficiently.

Transportation: The transportation here is so-so. The Hurricane Shuttle is not bad, on weekends it runs all day and takes you to Sunset (the mall), Publix (a grocery store), and back to school. Cabs suck. Especially on weekends at night when you're trying to go out it's really difficult to get one and they're really expensive. The metro is not that expensive and easy to use. It's good to get you to Dadeland mall which has Target, Michaels, Bed Bath and Beyond, and other big stores like that.

Local Atmosphere: The city of Miami is great in every way.

Transportation: The metro is extremely convenient and it goes straight to the airport.

Weather: Well, Miami is beautiful. But, it can be hot and it rains frequently.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel very safe on campus.

Academics: Once again, I am a freshman and am an undeclared major, so there is not much I can say yet.

4 College Freshman

Academics: My professors have been varied. Some are great; some are so-so; some are a bit disorganized. I have had a very good experience with the Academic Resource Center.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: There is a fair amount of drinking among underage students. However, I have not found that there is pressure - at least, I have not felt pressure. It seems that the people who drink, drink and those who don't, don't.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I don't have much to say because me knowledge is not personal. It is based on the experiences of others.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: The University of Miami is extremely diverse in almost every way. However, I wouldn't say there is a lot of economic diversity.

4 College Freshman

Majors: Well, I am just getting started at the school. I am also still in the process of choosing my major. I am considering theater, journalism, and film. Currently, I am involved with tech-ing for a theater production and am really enjoying it.

4 College Freshman

Majors: I have not had an internship yet because I am a freshman. Miami is known for being pretty helpful with internships. I plan to pursue one after my freshman year.

5 College Freshman

Scholarships: I applied and was offered a merit scholarship and a grant. Then I submitted my FAFSA and received two loans. I have had to supplement with a private loan this year. Next year, I hope to be a resident assistant, which will cover my room and board.

3 College Freshman

Campus Dining: The dining hall food is okay, but one can get tired of it easily. There a number of other good places to eat on campus and off-campus as well.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Athletics are very important at the U, but not so important to me so I don't have much to say about them!

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: The are a number of options within walking distance of the campus. In addition, many other options can be accessed by metro.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I really like my school's location in a vibrant and diverse city. I enjoy the feeling of being immersed in an interesting cultural area.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Students at Miami are known for being attractive. There are quite a number of students into athletics. However, quite a number of students are also very studious.

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable "hot" girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you'd expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren't that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you'll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it's your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.
