Athletics: I am not directly involved in the athletic program on campus but I do enjoy going to the football games. Everyone has a lot of school spirit and loves our athletic teams. Football, basketball and volleyball are the biggest varsity sports on campus. Club soccer and intramural soccer are very popular as well and I have been to many soccer games to support my friends on the teams.

Weather: If you like sunny skies, then Miami is for you. It is almost always sunny and hot but it does rain at weird hours and inconsistently. I love the weather here and it is perfect for going to the beach and spending a lot of time outside. The occasional cold front keeps the area cool, which is quite refreshing.

Guys & Girls: I have met a wide range of different guys. Many are international and very attractive. Most of the guys and people in general that I have met are extremely smart. Although many guys come from a wealthy family and therefore are a bit arrogant and conceited. You just have to find the right people that you want to hang out with. Most freshman guys are not looking for a relationship though, only a hookup.

Scholarships: I am currently trying to confirm how much money I owe. Because my parents filed for an extension, they could not turn in their taxes until recently. Records showed that they made more money this year and now a good chunk of my financial aid has been taken away. I am still not sure how this is going to turn out or if I will be able to attend the university next year or semester.

Off-Campus Dining: I have not eaten too much off campus because I have 19 meals a week in the dining hall. But I have eaten at two sushi restaurants and a few fast food places. I think that the food is good quality and very close to campus, making it convenient.

Overall Experience: I love how international this school is. It makes everything much more enjoyable and interesting. Also, because so many kids were coming from across the nation and other countries, many people did not know anyone and were then open to making friends. In addition, I like the smaller class sizes and the one on one time that I get to spend with all of my professors.

Drug Safety: It definitely depends on who you hang out with on campus but I have noticed underaged drinking but not on campus. It mainly occurs at house parties off of campus.

Off-Campus Housing: I have yet to venture into trying to find a housing option off of campus. So far I want to live on campus for the next three years.

Health & Safety: I have never had an issue with safety on campus. The staff in the dorms and on campus are very good about sending out warnings and telling students if there is a threat in the area. I walk around campus and off campus by myself quite frequently and feel completely safe.

Transportation: Almost everything can be accessed through public transportation and/or walking. I almost always walk everywhere but when I do go off campus I take the metro. The school does have a shuttle that runs to Sunset Place and Coconut Grove and they are very convenient.

Diversity: The diversity on my campus is one of the most appealing factors. In my architectural studio of ten kids, only four are from the United States. The others are from Haiti, Ecuador, Kuwait, China and Panama. Learning about the other cultures has been eye opening but it keeps things interesting. I have been studying Spanish for years and many of the native speakers have been patiently teaching me their language.

Majors: The program is very selective. They receive hundreds of applications and portfolios and only have about seventy spots to fill. I was fortunate enough to be chosen to study in the school of architecture. I put together a portfolio with eighteen of my paintings. They were not particularly looking for architectural projects but rather artistic ability.

Majors: I have not started an internship but I plan on starting one this summer at a firm back in my hometown. I have to have completed 5,000 hours of internship in my five years in the architectural program. I am concerned about finding an internship in Miami when I am attending school as well.

Facilities: I absolutely love our campus and the facilities that are included. The campus is beautiful and there are so many places on campus where one can study, eat, relax, etc.

Guys & Girls: The students at University of Miami tend to be very superficial and snobby. The Sororities and Fraternities create an instituionalized hierarchy of wealth and popularity.

Campus Dining: The food is not bad. I actually really liked it for the first few months. After a while, you get kind of tired of it but it can still be enjoyable and definitely edible. I'm a vegetarian and there's usually a good amount of options, but there are some days where I feel limited on what I can get.

Greek Life: Greek life is cool here because it's not an overwhelming force on campus, yet they do have an influence and are seen. The only thing that isn't the best is that sororities don't get houses because there's a law in Coral Gables that puts a limit on the number of women that can live together.

Health & Safety: I feel extremely safe. There are sometimes safety issues, but they're always taken care of quickly and efficiently.

Transportation: The transportation here is so-so. The Hurricane Shuttle is not bad, on weekends it runs all day and takes you to Sunset (the mall), Publix (a grocery store), and back to school. Cabs suck. Especially on weekends at night when you're trying to go out it's really difficult to get one and they're really expensive. The metro is not that expensive and easy to use. It's good to get you to Dadeland mall which has Target, Michaels, Bed Bath and Beyond, and other big stores like that.

Local Atmosphere: The city of Miami is great in every way.

Weather: Well, Miami is beautiful. But, it can be hot and it rains frequently.

Health & Safety: I feel very safe on campus.

Academics: Once again, I am a freshman and am an undeclared major, so there is not much I can say yet.

Academics: My professors have been varied. Some are great; some are so-so; some are a bit disorganized. I have had a very good experience with the Academic Resource Center.

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable "hot" girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you'd expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren't that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you'll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it's your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.
