4 College Senior

Nightlife: People who like to party know where/when/who, but I'm not really into that sort of thing so I can't say much.

4 College Junior

Nightlife: Greek life is the source of the party scene, for sure. Unfortunately, we only have 4 bars on campus, and people usually flock to one of them.

4 College Junior

Nightlife: Night life is great because of the variety and convenience of distance from campus.

College Freshman

Nightlife: I don't know too much about off campus fun. I don't venture off campus too much but I'm pretty sure it's plenty to do

4 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Not that bad actually. We have three bars for you to choose from, frat parties, house parties, and parties in the route 1 apartments. There is almost always a party going on somewhere you just have to know the right people. One problem with this though: if you're a freshman guy, good luck getting into any parties. Everyone likes to be exclusive and only tell girls about gatherings, so make sure you're buddy buddy with the chicks on your floor or spend the night watching cat videos online.

With only a handful of bars in town and no bar on campus, it’s a good thing that D.C. and Baltimore are not too far away. As for parties on Fraternity Row, times have changed: alcohol-focused parties are fading, and UMCP seems to be slowly changing into a barren, dry campus, as it continues to crack down on on-campus revelries. This is where living off campus comes in handy for students who crave alcohol and parties.

There are thousands of above-age students on campus, and even though not all of them are patrons of the bar scene, many students enjoy the experience of doing the bar thing on a Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday night. Now that the University has become stricter about on-campus parties, these bars may become more crowded, as students search for alternatives. Students also bring the nightlife into their own homes and apartments by throwing parties that don’t require an ID or a wait to get in.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink
Bars usually have happy hours, most popular on Fridays. Cornerstone provides the cheapest food and drinks. For nightlife, Cornerstone and Bentley's are the same price for drinks.
Organization Parties
Given that there are nearly 600 organizations on campus, you can imagine the potential for events at UMCP and in the College Park area. An array of various student groups throw events throughout the year. Fraternities have their rush parties at the beginning of the semester and sometimes themed parties during the semester.
Did You Know?
  • The liquor board does come out occasionally to check on bars. They issue citations to students who attempt to use fakes.
  • Cops patrol Route 1 and park outside the bars. Have a great night out, but do not be belligerent or else you could be arrested.
