Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Admissions examines 25 factors when evaluating an application, including the essay, extracurricular involvement, recommendations, residency, racial diversity, geographic diversity, high school achievements, special talents, and skills.
  • If you apply by the priority deadline, you will be considered for the Honors College and Gemstone programs.
  • If your high school GPA is not strong, you can spend a full year (30 credits) earning better grades at a community college, and you will be a competitive applicant to the University of Maryland as a transfer student.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Don't let your grades stress you out, and if you do, sign up for a massage at the Health Center and have it billed to your student account.
  • Don't worry about being single. The friendships you make here will more than distract you from not being in a relationship, and you can elect to never go home alone with a quick trip to the bars.
  • Go to class. Professors will remember your face, and come time for final grades, you may be able to swindle a point or two just for attendance.
  • Use D.C. to your advantage: Internships, jobs, and entertainment abound just half an hour away.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Reservations are required to schedule a campus visit/information session. The information session is generally a 45-minute presentation conducted by an admissions representative. After the session, there's a 90-minute walking tour of campus led by a Maryland Images student ambassador.
Campus Tours
The 90-minute "Terrapin Tours" of campus are led by students Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. No reservation is needed. Prospective students visit classroom buildings, a room in one of the residence halls, one of the two dining halls, one of the libraries, the athletic facilities, and the student union. These tours leave from the main floor of the Rossborough Inn.
Overnight Visits
The University offers the Overnight Stay Program for accepted students in the spring. Prospective students are given a complimentary pass to the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC) and tag along with a University student who shares common interests with them.
Did You Know?
Students have the opportunity to join the group called Maryland Images, the official tour guide organization at the UMCP.
