3 College Senior

Guys & Girls: The ladies and gentlemen at my school are highly intelligent and seem to be interested in not only academics but also extra curricular activities. Each person has their own fashion sense that ranges from classy and chic to bizzarre and eccentric.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: I tend to meet more people in my major than anyone else.

College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Some students seem to keep to themselves a lot, which is understandable: they might be really shy and just focused on their work. However, they can come off as unfriendly because they don't want to socialize with other classmates. And some students are very nice and outgoing and straightforward. It might also depend on what they are studying because if they are within your major, you might already have a lot of common interests. If you wander around The Commons, there are so many different people, it's hard to say what they are all really like unless you sit down and talk to them. Unfortunately, it's not like that and most students don't just easily approach each other. Mostly because some students already belong to a social group and do not so easily invite others in. Whenever you find those people you can really connect with easily though, it doesn't matter where you met them. That's the fun thing about building relationships.

5 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Students are studying morning, noon, and day. There are barely any parties and no one really does anything that does not incorporate time to study. There will be occasionally, students who are party goers, but for the most part, if a student comes to UMBC, they are here to study and get their "A".

Guys & Girls: This seems kind of shallow, doesn't it? I guess everyone is pretty different; there is a lot of variety in looks, interests, behaviors, etc. For the most part, everyone is pretty friendly and smart.

The diverse student body makes it difficult to really define the average UMBC student. As a middle-sized campus, it is fairly easy for students to meet others and create their own niche, and there are plenty of organizations and events where students can explore their interests and mingle with others. Overall, everyone is very friendly and open minded. Cliques do exist, but they are not too common, probably because most UMBC students tend to have multiple facades. Nerdy Greeks, intellectual hipsters, and artsy scientists are just some of the “hybrids” found at UMBC.

There are more guys than girls at UMBC, but the ratio difference is very small and does not influence dating on campus. Relationships and hookups are both found at UMBC—it is just as easy to find students who are not looking for commitment as it is to find those who are. Even though everyone is different here, the one thing all UMBC students have in common is the habit of spending long hours in the library studying, which stems from the University’s strength in the sciences and engineering.

Social Scene
UMBC students are very outgoing and will give anyone the scoop on the popular places to go out on campus or in Baltimore City. Everyone is very friendly and willing to get to know other students, but you still need to break out of your shell and begin a conversation. Students at UMBC love to have fun and go out. On Thursdays, many students head to Fish Head Cantina for Fishbowl, its college night. On other days of the week and during the weekend, parties can be found everywhere on and off campus. It is also important to note that UMBC students love to party, but also leave lots of time for studying.
Hookups or Relationships?
At UMBC, there is a good combination of hookups and relationships-it all depends on what you are looking for. A hookup is not too difficult to find, but neither is a good relationship. There are definitely a fair share of people who want something more serious.
Dress Code
There is no real dress code at UMBC. Students are free to express themselves in whatever clothes they want to wear, as long as they are appropriate and respectful. It is very rare for any student to be found wearing anything deemed inappropriate on campus.
