4 College Senior

Facilities: The student life is awsome.

3 College Senior

Facilities: When it comes to studying and achieving a higher grade point average, the library and study areas are always full. Many students spend a numerous amount of time trying to receive the highest grade possible for a class, which is always a good thing. However, there is an obvious lack of extra-curricular activities that makes the campus a bit dull and too serious. There is also a lack of promotion for extra-curricular activities, which makes students miss out on some of the fun that comes along with being in college.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Everything is pretty average to a college campus. The academics and programs are excellent, with much support from faculty and fellow students. UMBC does not have a terribly large social scene, but you will make friends if you go out and try to. The school is basically what you make of it.

UMBC’s facilities are clean and well built. Students can go to The Commons to grab a meal, take part in a karaoke night, see a movie, or watch a political debate. The Main Street area of The Commons is perfect for advocating important causes, promoting events, showcasing art, or sponsoring blood drives. The University Center's ground level is were two of the most popular restaurants on campus are located: Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. It is also a great hangout place where students meet to drink coffee, eat, and chat with friends. The Retrievers Activities Center, commonly known as the RAC, has an arena track, cardio balcony, fitness classes, a gym, pool, tennis court, and weight room.

The library is another great spot, and with five floors, it supplies students with plenty of study rooms. During finals and midterms, these rooms fill up fast, but luckily, students are able to access other buildings on campus to find a quiet area to focus on their studies. The Fine Arts Building offers high-tech music, photography, and dance studios for students to express their artistic talents. The Engineering building has a 24-hour computer lab where registered students are free to come and spend late hours of the night on assignments. Most UMBC classrooms are smaller, which gives students greater access to professors and a sense of intimacy during classes.

"Green" Initiatives
UMBC participates in RecycleMania, a joint initiative of more than 600 college campuses that spreads awareness about recycling. To get UMBC students excited, there is a mascot for this event called Green Man, who is a student dressed from head to toe in a green spandex outfit. He walks around campus, and UMBC students try to take a picture with him to e-mail to recycle@umbc.edu. A winning photo is selected every week during the event, and at the end, the weekly winners are entered to win a grand prize.

Another annual green event at UMBC is Ecofest. Led by the Students for Environmental Awareness, this week-long event tries to spread the word about organic products and cleaning up the environment. This student group is also responsible for the "trash monster"-the SEA and volunteers from other organizations clean up campus and build a trash monster with the garage they find around campus. This helps show students how much litter is left around campus.

UMBC also has recycling bins in all academic/admin buildings, the library, and all residential halls. Overall, UMBC is a very environmentally friendly campus.
School Slang
  • "Going to The Spot": Outtakes, the 23.5-hour convenience store, was previously named "The Spot." Even students who came to UMBC after the name change still call it "The Spot." So, when students say they are going to The Spot, they are going to Outtakes.

Traditions
  • Bonfire: Every year, there is a bonfire during homecoming week.
  • Homecoming: Every year during homecoming week, UMBC brings a big-name comedian to campus. There is also a concert with a well-known band and Midnight Madness (see below).
  • Midnight Madness: This is the homecoming celebration that takes place every fall in the RAC (Retrievers Activity Center). Instead of a football game, UMBC's homecoming revolves around men's basketball because UMBC does not have a football team.
  • Quadmania: This week-long spring semester event features concerts from famous and local bands and a carnival. Past Quadmania performers have included T-Pain and Third Eye Blind.
Urban Legends
  • Rubbing True Grit's nose is said to give you good luck.
  • The campus was built supposedly in the '60s as "riot-proof."
  • The president of UMBC allegedly uses the school's underground tunnels to pop up at random events without anyone seeing him walking to them.
Favorite Things To Do
UMBC has a wide range of programs and events to suit any student's need or mood-just check out the SEB calendar of events. With things like film nights, movie discussions, lectures, and a plethora of clubs on campus, it is difficult to pick a favorite thing. Plays put on by the theater department and SEB concerts nights at Flat Tuesdays are two of the most attended programs on campus.

Clubs and Organizations on Campus
Most UMBC students are a part of an organization. Some of the most active clubs on campus are Campus Crusade for Christ, Greek organizations, Jewish Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Persian Student Association, and Students for Environmental Awareness. With more than 100 organizations to choose from, you can easily find like-minded students, and if you want to create a club that doesn't already exist, it is very simple. The necessary forms to begin the process are online, and staff members from the Office of Student Life are there to help. They will explain all the needed steps to form your organization and will even help when creating a constitution to make sure your organization's objective is clear.
