4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: I personally haven't had any negative experiences concerning strictness. Sometimes people complain about strictness on things like the honor code or smoking, but I don't think its that bad.

4 College Junior

Campus Strictness: So far nothing that strict has held me back or anything, but I don't live on campus nor do I smoke, do drugs, or party often.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: In my opinion a little too strict especially on noise violations

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: I'm a student marshall. The police are fine people.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The students here are chill so no need for policies

Following rules are an integral part of life at any university, especially UMBC. The 24-hour police here are always alert and quick to arrive wherever they are needed. Violating any of the campus policies against drugs or alcohol will get you a date with Judicial Services, and breaking campus parking or motor vehicle rules will get you a pricey ticket.

In the dorms, residential assistants are always on the lookout to for any possible problems. They can easily crack down on any parties or write up students, and in general, they tend to be more harsh on freshmen than upperclassmen in the dorms. In the apartments, students tend have more freedom, and complaints are less of a problem there. Overall, students need to watch their behavior because UMBC is a stickler for conforming to the rules. However, this also makes it much easier to get your work done—which is theoretically the reason why you are in college in the first place!

Facts & Statistics

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Drinking underage
  • Speeding
  • Violating noise regulations
Visitation Policies
Students who have people visit them in either Patapsco or Susquehanna halls, which mostly house freshmen, have to sign in all guests, who also need to leave an ID card with the front desk. Students who live in Harbor Hall, Erickson Hall, or the off-campus Walker Apartments have to swipe guests into the building, as well as each floor. Residents of West Hill, Hillside, and Terrace apartments can have guests come and go without checking them in. There is a lot more freedom in the apartments.
