Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Students tend to find their experience at Mary Washington to be a unique one. It really is what you make of it. With its small-school benefits and focused education, if you want to be academically-focused, it is possible. By meeting people through various sports and clubs, if you want to be socially focused, this is also possible. There are complaints from a decent portion of the student body that the social scene is lacking, but people who are enjoying themselves at the University tend to turn a deaf ear. While the social scene isn't exactly bumping in comparison to other bigger universities, you can still have fun here, even if it takes that extra push to find ways to have fun.

Due to its small size, you will never feel like just another number at this school. It's common to frequently run into people you know and to recognize anonymous faces you see regularly, just by walking to classes. A few students will claim that the school is too small, but with a regular high school size of 4,000 students, many students tend to find the size comfortable. The size may be awkward for one-night stands, as it's no surprise to run into the person the next day at the dining hall, but it is beneficial in that there is easy access in getting notes from familiar classmates. Also, creating a more personal relationship with the professor is a benefit of Mary Washington's size, as instructors are usually willing to answer your questions or sometimes even curve grades. The small-school atmosphere may not be for everyone, but it certainly has its upsides.

Off-Campus Housing: The Fredericksburg area is very reasonably priced. There are plenty of places to live around the college because the campus is right in the middle of the town. I was able to easily obtain an apartment that was 50 meters away from the campus. The area is generally very safe and we rarely have issues.

Academics: UMW has amazing academic programs. You can read an online rating about our academics, or you can experience the true drive for knowledge and success by attending our schools. UMW was not my first school, I transferred into it my Sophomore year. I chose to become a biology major. This school has pushed me to become a better student and person through their programs. I am finishing my degree a much more rounded, accountable, and critically thinking individual. The small class environment allows you to be able to interact with other students and the professors, something you couldn't do at a bigger school. While this will help you grasp a better understanding of the material, it also makes the professors hold you to a higher standard because you aren't a number at UMW. You are a student with a name, face, and personality. I can talk to every one of my previous professors at UMW and they still remember who I am. As for my other school, I don't recall ever meeting them.

Academics: I can honestly say that the professors at the university are some of the best around. They not only know their material to the fullest extent, they an actually teach! Also, if you ever need help with the material, they will take time out of their busy schedules to help you.

Facilities: The athletic facilities have really come a long way in the past few years. They just added the Anderson center which is beautiful! We were able to hold part of the NCAA tournament here this past year. The student gym has everything that a student needs to be able to lift from machines, to free weights, a power lifting platform, bench press, squat racks.... there really isn't anything missing. In addition, the athletes weight room is fantastic and they too have made many new renovations (including a new strength and conditioning coach). The library has 3 floors and it appeals to the needs of those who need complete quiet and also to those who need to group study and talk. The campus is beautiful as it has many trees and spots to sit and relax on campus walk. The architecture has stayed true to its original time frame, and it is simply one of the most amazing campuses I have been on.

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many different places that you can eat around town. Quite a few are in immediate walking distance, and the others are in walking distance but a little farther. If you want a chain restaurant, there is an endless variety in Central Park. If you want something unique, downtown Fredericksburg has very many privately owned restaurants that are unique and tasty!
