4 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: Fredericksburg is great because it is so close to so many shopping areas and somewhat close to D.C..

4 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Central Park is probably the biggest mall complex that students regularly visit. Last year, I would go with some friends once every 2 weeks on average. There is also Washington D.C. about an hour or so up the road. I went to two Washington Capitals hockey games sponsored by the street hockey club. It's not very feasible to go one your own to a D.C. sports game, but once a semester, the hockey club got two buses to take a students up and see the Caps play. There were also trips to see Washington Nationals baseball games.

Local Atmosphere: I'm pretty sure the locals hate us.

Shopping is pretty good with the mall and Central Park (which has just about everything), and you could just ride the Fred to those places if you don't have a car.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: Fredericksburg is a really pretty small town with lots of history and cool stuff to look at. There's a coffee shop called Hyperion that's really good and popular with students. There's also a used book store, a shop that has every kind of candy known to man, and at least three graveyards. The town's good for taking walks in.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Quaint little town with a super cute downtown area

During the daytime, a student can be found relaxing in a coffee shop or sauntering the sidewalks while passing various, small shops downtown. Downtown is the only place within walking distance. Central Park is a short drive, and there, you'll find every chain restaurant and store imaginable, and on a nice day, it's enjoyable to walk around and visit the boutiques. Daytime activities seem to be redundant but plentiful, due to various shopping options. There is also the Marquee Cinemas that is as beautiful as it is historic, and it can be a great place to hang out with some friends.

A common complaint filed by students is the lack of nightlife opportunities. In terms of nightlife, Mary Washington is a quaint place with not too much to do. There are no clubs, and not too much is open past 12 a.m. However, there are a couple of bars downtown that are open until 2 a.m. that upperclassmen have found to be fun to go to. In terms of the surrounding neighborhood, there has been some tension between the local community and Mary Washington due to feelings of invasion with the growing number of college students, but overall, the locals tend to be friendly.
