Guys & Girls: its a 70 percent girls 30 percent guys. school and sometimes its hard to have guy friends and balance it with your female friends . The school over all is very friendly and welcoming of all people.

Guys & Girls: You come to UMW thinking "65% girls? YES!", then you realize they're stuck-up...

Guys & Girls: Everyone here thinks they're a 10 and they are the greatest thing god ever made. Very unapproachable UNLESS you are a highschooler inquiring about the school. Otherwise they're some of the rudest most stuck up people I have ever met. Most of the friendly/normal people transfer out after the 1st semester or 1st year. I know this review sounds subjective but seriously, I'm not joking. I think it's just the demographic of student that goes here thats why the same issues perpetuate.

Guys & Girls: aI didnt know girls could be so ugly....its like in addition to all of the weirdos from high school congregating at UMW, al of the ugly ones did too. mixture of weird theater kids and the weird horse girl from elementary school. You do become close with the handful of normal people you meet. That is, until you all are finally able to transfer to a better school. Do not come here, all of the normal people I know are planning on transferring.

1 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: This is a very big Transfer school. The freshman class is by far the largest class since most transfer out after their first semester or at the end of the year. 50% of the dorms are freshman only while the other 50% are shared among sophomores, juniors, seniors, and super seniors. According to the VP of the school, 93% of students live on campus so it's not like theres a lot of upperclassmen living off campus..no its cuz everyone transfers out. Hard to maintain friendships here. Most people who stay though stay because they are afraid of having to find a new set of friends again/leaving friends behind. when you can just make the same friends at another university. Most students will transfer to pursue a better education and to be able to experience an actual college atmosphere which allows you to grow. There is literally nothing to do on this campus. You go to class, you come back, you chill with a friend, repeat. Weekends are no different.

visiting students: you think its just a coincidence that whenever you visit on weekends the campus is dead? its because everyone goes home its so boring here. The ONLY time you see people on campus is during the week when people are going to class. Do not mistake this for people 'doing stuff on campus.'

its hard to grow as a person and to develop skills too when you are limited to a small group of friends due to the mad scramble at the beginning of the year.

When asked if you go to the University of Mary Washington, it is not unheard of for people to go, "Isn't that an all-girls school?" With an approximate ratio of 70 percent girls to 30 percent guys, it is no wonder where the University gets its nicknames like "UMW: University of Mostly Women." Because UMW used to be an all-women's college, it still has part of that legacy with most of its students being female. It is very common to sit in a classroom of 30, where there will only be four or five guys. However, though many girls will jokingly, or not-so-jokingly, mention that there are no guys here—generally, it does not seem to really bother them to an extreme extent.

There aren't many guys at the school, so to a degree, it may seem like there are no attractive guys since the numbers don't give you much to work off of, but there are definitely still some attractive guys on campus. When it comes to girls, there are definitely many. The numbers themselves may be deceiving if you expect to come to a school full of beautiful, Greek goddess-like women. Attractive girls tend to be scattered across campus in random proportions rather than all around. Looks aside, both girls and guys tend to be very friendly and can inspire anything from a hookup to a full-fledged relationship.

Birth Control Available?
Yes
Women can get birth control without an exam. Print out the Previsit Questionnaire and fill it out, then when you turn it into the clinic, you can sign up for an appointment. The nurse will then review the questionnaire to see if you are eligible for birth control, then during the appointment, the nurse will tell you all of the pros/cons/safety procedures for using birth control. You'll then be prescribed birth control for $12 a pack, which is a good price. They also carry emergency contraceptives, such as Plan B, for $35. Every time you need to refill your birth control, just set up another appointment, and you can either buy one pack or a set of three.

Social Scene
Most of the activity tends to revolve around the clubs and varsity sports teams at the University. To sum it up, to engage in a social scene, one must either join a club or tag along with friends who are in them. Other than that, there is an underground fraternity, in which a small portion of the school participates.
Hookups or Relationships?
While monogamous relationships do exist on campus, having a hookup buddy, or several, tends to be a more common choice. Since the girl-to-guy ratio is very skewed toward females, girls tend to find or date guys from other schools since the University does not provide a good guy ratio to work off of. Guys, meanwhile, can potentially have the option of hooking up with a wide spectrum of girls.
Dress Code
Considering the ratio, girls do not find much of a need to dress to impress, especially on the weekdays. Leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants, paired with an old sweatshirt, are a very common, comfortable attire for girls. Guys tend to wear whatever they are going to wear to the gym that day, or khakis/jeans paired with some T-shirt. You will see both girls and guys more dressed up on the weekends, but in general, the outfits are very generic and usually created out of comfort for the one or two classes they will attend that day.
Did You Know?
Up until 1972, Mary Washington was an all-female school. This could be the background explanation for the given ratio.
